BUILDING THE MKII MCB FUNFLY. was created by Ex-Member
Hello all.
I want to do a fully documented build thread of the MKII funfly.
I hope this thread can be used by others as a guide to help them build the MKII from my plans or kit.
Can we please keep the idle banter down on this one as i don't want it to get too confusing.
I welcome any criticism good or bad as long as its not rude, also any idea's on how to improve the build/thread would be more than welcome. :)

Lets get started shall we.

First job is to cut the wing ribs ( the wing needs building first as we have to shape the wing cut outs before we build the fuselage)
I cut a template from ply and use that to cut each rib from 2.4mm balsa.
you need 14 for the wing.

Then you need to pin a 6mm square spar to the plan and pin another 6mm square spar on the spacer marking (this is to help keep the ribs level)
Then glue the first rib in place.

Start at the middle and work out to the tips.

You can see the spacing between most of the ribs is a standard 100mm sheet, the only ones different are the ribs that run in the fuselage.

Then add the top spar and the l/e.

Next job while the wing is pinned down is to add the sheer webbing, this is 1.6mm sheet at 100mm wide.

These 2 will have to be cut to fit and leave the center empty.

Glue on the 9mm square t/e and we have a nearly completed wing.

Now sand all the joints smooth and shape the t/e to match the airfoil section.

The "D" box is made from 1.6mm balsa and is cut 80mm wide from a full 1.2m sheet.
The 20mm off cut is used to make the t/e cover.

Tomorrow i am going to finish the wing and start on the fuselage.
Thank you for watching. :cheer: :cheer: :cheer: :cheer:

I like the way you've used square section strip for the leading edge .... too many people use molded LE's & I think some building techniques have been lost with this.
I expect this post to be deleted shortly & let you keep this as a very informative thread .... Nice one Tony. ;)

Lets try to finish the wing today shall we. :)

Next job is to glue the "d" box sheeting on.
Cut the 1.6x1.2m sheet down to a width of 80mm and glue the front edge to the top of the l/e spar.

Once dry pull the sheet down and glue to the ribs and top spar.

Next glue the t/e sheet down, this is the 20mm off cut from the "d" box sheet you have just stuck on.

Flip the wing over and do the same to the other side.

Then we cut 20 cap strips, these are from 1.6mm sheet and are 6mm wide and 100mm long.

(i could offer these ready cut, so all you have to do is trim to fit)
Stick the cap strips on all but the center 4 ribs, centering them (apart from the 2 tip ribs where they have to be flush to the outside edge)

Then do the 4 center sheets making sure they overlap the ribs at each end.

Now all we have to do is smooth the joints, leading, trailing edges and the tips.

There we are a wing ready to be fitted into the fuselage.

The ailerons will be fitted once the wing is fixed in place, then we can position the aileron servo's.

Next job will be to make up all the tail from 6mm square.
But thats for the next installment, i am going flying. laters.:cheer: :cheer:

.Once the sheeting is glued, how do you hold it down because its being bent isnt it when gluing it,is it a case of cyano and just letting it dry or do you put those peg things on then drizzle cyano along.

i run cyano down the ribs, then hold it in place with my hand for 30 secs till its set, then move along the wing doing a bit at a time.

if using pva you would have to either pin it to the ribs or weight it down.

I need to say thank you to OLD FART for pointing out an error in my build thread :cheer: , i need all the help i can get.

On with the horizontal stab.
Take a bit of 6mm balsa cut it to shape and pin to the plan, next cut and fit the 9x6 leading and trailing edges.

Cut and fit the tips and start fitting the ribs and spars. (all 6x6)

Should look something like this when finished ( though i expect better)

Elevator is made in the same way.

Fin and rudder as also made in the same way from 9x6 and 6x6 balsa.

That's it, pull them from the board and sand smooth and to shape.
You can hinge the elevator and rudder now or after covering, your choice.

Thank you for watching, this has been a muck up production.:P :P

I am sorry to report that i have done very little today. :(
Though i have cut 20 wing ribs and all the cap strips and spars for the next wing.

Started on the fuselage eventually.

Cut the full side from a sheet of 3mm x 100mm x1.2 m balsa, from the offcut cut out the doubler for the nose area.

glue the doubler to the fuselage side make sure you make left and right hand sides.

Mark a center line 34mm down from the top of the fuselage and Mark and cut out the wing slots from the finished sides.
Next job is to cut out the ply formers to the measurements shown on the plan.

sorry but that's it for today.

Back to the future, ooops i meam back to the fuselage. :P

Cut out the formers to the size shown on the plan.

Take F3 and hold it in place while you stick the 6x6 spars in place in the rear of the fuselage.

Glue the end 6x6 in place and repeat on the other fuselage side.

Then glue F2 and F3 in place making sure they are upright.

Then glue the second fuselage side to the formers and pin down to the board on the center line, pull the tail in and glue to a bit of shaped 6x6.

Glue F4 in place making sure the snake holes are at the top of the fuselage.

With the fuselage pinned upside down on the plan, start sheeting the underside of the fuselage from F2 back to the tail.

Then pull the nose in and stick to F1a.

Time for lunch, back later. :silly:

I think the only precut parts in a kit should be the ribs and the fuselage sides! Precut the cap strips, never!

Do it now, you may never get another chance

be spacers on the bolts sir.

only pre-cutting the cap strips because it can cut down on the materials i have to send, as i can cut them out of offcuts from the build.

Tha cap strips would be better if they are cut a tad too long so that the builder can trim them to fit. :)

They are all cut oversize gents.
Not that it matters as i don't think this will be getting kitted, no interest. :(

We forge on with the MKII build.

Once the bottom of the fuselage is sheeted and sanded to shape, flip it over and you should have something like this (better than this i hope)

Then you can start to slide the wing in, you will more than likely have to sand the slots out a bit to get the wing in.

Slide the wing home, center and square up with the tail of the fuselage, when happy with the position glue in place.( mine is first tacked in place with cyano and then the gaps are filled with epoxy to give a solid fix.

Place the tailplane on the fuselage and square up, checking its level with the main wing as well.
When happy glue down.

Sheet about 100mm of the top of the fuselage in front of the tailplane, then you can line up and glue in the vertical stabilizer.

We have an airframe.

That's it for a couple of days as i need to order the piano wire for the u/c and some snakes.
Back soon i hope.:P
