I am presently building a Guillows Super Cub, which would originally been a rubber powered free flight model. My club has access to a gym that we fly at on Thursday evenings and most fly depron models. I am not a lover of foamy stuff and so it is my intention to add mini radio and see if an outrunner will get it aloft.
This is a trial model and is not meant to represent the pinnacle of modelling achievement. However, I intend to exercise my not inconsiderable covering skills to make the aircraft one to admire. Hopefully Sarah can show me how to post pics.
Regards
Gary

See if you can get your hands on the electrics from a 'minium' model, they are pretty light, and ideal for tiny indoor models, as they ARE, and are known to work.

if you are calm and collected when all about you are going berserk - you've missed something important!

Well done, your first thread
Reduce pictures to 800x600
When you reply to your thread, go to the Attachments box just below this white box as you write, click on "add file" it should then open up a new window to your computer and you can find your pictures. Click on the one you want to use, and it should then be added into the attachments under number 1- add more and so on if you wish- but ALWAYS press the insert at the end of the attachments box

and it should add your picture into the text box itself.

I wish I was a glow worm, a glow worm's never glum.
Cos how can you be grumpy when the sun shines out your bum?!

You may have to work quite hard to get an 'RC' Guillows light enough for indoors. Their kits were noted for scale appearance but not for lightness of construction. ;)
I am sure it will fly with RC in but the question will be how fast.
I will follow the blog with interest.

ps Isn't 224" span is a bit big for indoors! ;) ;) ;)

Sorry I forgot the oblique mark between the 2 and the 4. It should have read 22/24 inch model.

Monsieur Chaddock, I agree with the weight thing. It is fairly hefty already but the wings are large so I'm hopeful. It may be a little on the fast side but I don't like depron, don't want a stik fly type of thing, so I want to give it a go and see what happens. If ya don't try........
Anyway I've been wrestling with computers tonight and hope to get some pics up tomorrow.

I may also give the veron tiger a go to see if I can make a job of that. I really appreciate the advice fellas, please keep it up.

Notice I said fellas Sarah :) :) :)

Well done gary, I shall look forward to this one. I've recently introduced Scale RC into the BMFA Scale Indoor Nationals programme - maybe you could be an entry on 12th and/or 13th April.......

I modded a rubber powered Veron Aeronca Chief to radio a few years ago when my colleague Ian Pallister started the class indoors. I used a Vapor radio and engine. The Vapor weighed about 16 gm ready to go, the Aeronca with the gear in, about 60 gm. The only change I had to make was to increase the pitch on the Vapor prop to cope with the higher flying speed. It's way underpowered as a model, but it does fly in a realistic way taking about three circuits of the hangar to get to height. I'll post pics of the installation if it's of interest....

Ok so now I have a couple of pics, I shall post them to see that the system actually works.

This is the Guillows Piper Super Cub and the plan and contents are dated 1965. I bought this kit a few years ago and put it to one side in my workshop. I want to fly scale type aircraft in our gymnasium with electric power and this size of model came to mind. I hope to use two micro servos an rx and an outrunner motor. This is the kit and I know that it is still available in Hobbycraft stores at around £18.00.

I was trying to explain to Sarah how a small model can be put on a board and moved around without disturbing the build. This shot shows the ribs cut out, the fuz partly assembled, and the tools that I am likely to use for the build.

That M'dear is where you is going wrong. Not just any port but a decent vintage LBVP.

Sarah, you asked about polythene the other day. You can see that I use greaseproof paper shiney side up. This makes the plan a little less clear, but nothing sticks to it including port splashes.

Here are some pics of the wings being put together. It can bee seen that I am quite happy to put pins through the wider balsa components and use pins either side of the thinner section secondary spars / leading edges. I do pin through the leading edges that extend past the point where they will be cut off as any pin damage here is irrelevant. I then use small metal weights to keep these pieces in place for glueing with balsa cement. These weights are any old item I have available in the workshop. The ones shown here are from a Picador clamping set.

Cyano also gets used from time to time for it's ability to hold rapidly.
