In an intense face book debate, about the de-ratification of 2northwest area examiners, the bmfa in general, are being given lots of stick, being labelled, coffin dodgers, rubber winders, bricks on string lovers, This rather disrespectful tirade is coming from radio flyers, and is levelled at who they think is too blame, I went on there, to straighten them out on a few things, and now, its gone quiet, SO, do you know how the association works, and do you know how to get things changed, or get an idea aired nationally?
A lack of answers will simply show me that no-one knows how the association works, which, to be honest, is my opinion of the majority of UK radio flyers,

I have no idea at all on how the BMFA works Alan, but I would say that if you have any suggestions or ideas on any possible changes to be made, then a letter to the General secretary might be the way to go.

To be honest, I can say I do not know how they work, but saying that, I don't understand how most large organisations work.
All I know is they are there for our benefit.
When I first started flying it was still called the SMAE and the club I joined was affiliated to it. They provided the insurance and the training guidelines and the free proficiency certification. All good stuff in my opinion.
Since then, I've only ever been in affiliated clubs, but if I wasn't, I would probably still stay as a member if not only for the insurance.
Just my opinion.

Sorry Alan, should I have said 'IT' as in the organisation? It was a generic THEY, if you know what I mean.
My old man was involved with the BMFA at a regional level but I never took a lot of notice.
Different regions and committees in each region. different committees for different disciplines. Any problems I would guess go to club rep first (or area rep if a country member) then he would take it either regional or straight back to head office depending on importance/urgency.

Pretty good,
The bmfa is broken up into areas, clubs--any clubs, can send along a representative to both take part in discussions about ideas from other areas, For instance, the C cert, this was a northwest suggestion, put on the discussion agenda for all area monthly meetings, and the area rep will then be instructed how tp vote on the issue at a tech commitee, comprised of reps from each area, this is how everything you see the bmfa do has been done, Whate area are you in? Lets see

sounds very complicated with too many committees and endless discussions before anything gets done.

It is indeed, But the sad thing is, everyone moans, only a small amount go to their area meetings, and believe e,its always the same ones at these meetings, i think in our area, there are about 100 clubs, sadly, only a small amount of clubs take part in area meetings, So, basically, everything that happens in the bmfa, that affects you, and the way your hobby/sport is shaped, is decided on by a tiny minority that go to these meetings, So, want change, go to your area meeting!

How does the BMFA work ??? Very slowly would be the answer, as there is so much legal , political, and diverse things that this organization sort out for the model flyers it represents. Maybe the question should read, "What do the BMFA do for us ", and the answer to that is a hell of a lot. The way we are allowed to fly, where we fly and the weight of the models we fly is all down to work done by the BMFA , talking to such as the CAA, local and national councils, land owners, and the Nat Trust
They are also responsible for representation in disputes with peeps who would and could stop us flying at a site that we have enjoyed for many many years. I do believe that one of our members clubs is being helped by the BMFA at the moment in a dispute with a barrister, something the club could not undertake due to the cost
Negotiations were done by the BMFA to secure 35 meg and the 2.4 frequencies for us .
Noise is now becoming a hazard to our hobby as it now only takes one complaint to get a club shut down. Without the BMFA there wouldnt be many clubs in existence.
Most peeps join the BMFA for the insurance, and I have no prob with this,as it gives the BMFA the finance to fight other things that do not get much publicity, but are vital for our hobby.
There are a lot of peeps who dont think much of the BMFA, and in my book they are foolish , as without this organisation we wouldnt enjoy the freedom we have now to enjoy our hobby
Long may they help us .

AS others have said, I honestly do not know the ins and outs of the BMFA, I know they are there if we need them, they are our guidance and i suppose "Yardstick", there are area representatives although I do believe they do not recognise Devon as an area. It is a body we probably all take for granted and who is sometimes easily dismissed by some, but like all things good, we don't know just how good until we lose it!
