Specialised Speed gun measures the models speed in relation to the "static" speed gun operators position
.

In other words it is measuring the planes speed relative to the ground and these dynamic soaring flights are done in not insignificant wind speeds.
It is still amazingly fast but I do wonder what the actual air speed is.

Dynamic Soaring (DS) takes place on the downwind side of a razor-back ridge.
The flight pattern is an ellipse, starting high, and looping down, round and back up.
As the model moves up, into the wind area, it accelerates, effectively running downwind. Then it dives down and round into the 'dead' air, before zooming up again.
Each time it comes up into the wind, it gains speed, providing it turns sufficiently tightly to not squander the speed in a huge loop.
As you may have noted from various video's - the positioning of the aircraft throughout each loop is critical, too low, too far out, too wide, and it slows down.
The radar gun only records the speed as the model comes in towards the hill, at the bottom of the loop, and in 'dead' air, so the registered speed is roughly the true airspeed, give or take a bit of rotor or turbulence - which again reduces the speed, not increases it.
As can be imagined, the 'G' loading on the model is enormous! A balsa or polystyrene model would disintegrate long before these kinds of speeds were achieved.

if you are calm and collected when all about you are going berserk - you've missed something important!

Yes indeed but you mention "rotor".
My understanding is that in undisturbed airflow conditions the effect of rotor can result in a local airflow up the slope (opposite to the wind direction) almost equal to the wind speed over the top.
I wonder........
If they go much faster they will begin to approach "compressibilty".

Air powered transport has improved greatly. Indeed so much so that the Wind Powered Racing Boats using Hydrorofoils are now described not "on the plane" but as "flying". The use of the Hydrofoils allows the boats to really go much faster than the wind speed. Have bit fun and search out the fastest sailing boats. If you have not seen them before you will be amazed and possibly entertained.

Have a nice Day, unless I don't like you.

One of my wolf hounds opens the tops on our milk cartons, empty of course, I screw the top on tight give her it and and very quickly she has the top unscrewed
