I'm considering moving the fin on top of the tail plane (would it still be a caprice?).
balsa is best.

Depending on what he is using to view the forum, it may not be obvious where PM's are or how to get to them?

The Caprice is another one I tried out when I was a youngster, I think it's a beautiful model and should easily convert to 2 channel radio, but try to stick as close to the original as possible please Paul.
Are you going to tissue & dope it or use heat shrink film?
Pol.
I just own the forum .... you guys make it great thanks.

If my memory serves me correctly, I seem to remember having to do some emergency repairs on site every time I flew mine.
Correct me if I'm thinking of another model please, ..... it was many years ago.

A little progress today.
Fuselage looks even thinner now I've cut balsa!
Think I'll take you advice Phil and leave the vertical stabilizer as drawn, may beef up the attachment, I hate butt joints...

Does that stuff shrink as tight as the old fashioned dope?paul d wrote: it'll be tissue covered along with "ezedope " so nice to use, no smell and it cleans up with water, .
I used to use several ultra light spray coats of the cellulose dope and I got a really tight skin that was very light. it did sag a little though when I painted it, but I can't remember what I coloured it with.
I prefer heat shrink film now, although I haven't had cause to use it for a while, .... HobbyKing sell it for peanuts.

The rigidity of doped tissue is a valid point.
It was popular, when no other lightweight covering materials were available, to build was was in effect a pretty flimsy single spar wing structure (to save weight) that relied heavily on the doped tissue to provide torsional rigidity. The down side was the tissue ended up 'brittle', prone to puncture and of course damp conditions!
The heat shrink films are both waterproof and much more puncture resistant but as a result are also more flexible. With the same style internal structure a film covered wing is likely to have lower torsional resistance.
It may still be adequate but if a 'free flight' glider is given a Tx controlled elevator it can be made to fly faster than would ever be possible with just 'natural' longitudinal stability in free flight.

You could always tish and dope it, then solarfilm on top for colour.

One of our ex-members used tish and that water-based floor varnish for his models. When I tried it, I got a horrible mess, because it foams up if you over-brush it - then the foam dries faster than the rest!

I just like tissue, it's cheap ( hobby craft sell 6 sheets for a quid) and I like the fact you can repair it in the field, I know it's delicate etc but I'm just weird......

Fuselage is 90% complete, need to get my head round a few radio/control run installation problems, made a start on producing wing ribs but I could really do with some thoughts on the following..
any idea of how to build in the elevators?
not really keen on the trim tab type of thing, over to you chaps.
