Three minutes after I took this photo, the ground jumped up and hit the Mossie. RIP two crew and a beautiful aircraft.

That's sad, looks like an inverted stall, followed by no control authority due to low speed, then, as the speed came up, ran out of height.

Do it now, you may never get another chance

At the inquest, it was found that a diaphragm had been incorrectly installed in a carb by a specialist fitter, after a major service, resulting in an inverted engine cut, assymetric thrust, and....
If you turn the audio up, you can hear an engine popping and banging as they struggle to recover.

It is interesting to note that during the investigation the AAIB found that several other Merlin carburettors were incorrectly adjusted and issued an advisory notice to that effect.

The problem was that out of respect for their age WWII Merlin engined aircraft hardly ever pull negative G so any set up in the faults in the inverted capability of the carburettor goes unnoticed.

In this case it was judged the pilot had very briefly gone into negative G. With the carburettors correctly set the engine would have continued as normal.

Note the Spit has 3 pipes per side while the Hurri has 6.

I wonder if he feels in the slightest bit guilty, I know I'd never work on another engine again.

The 3 pipe are 'ejector' exhausts which added about 70lbs thrust at full power.
Some Hurricanes had them as well.

Somewhere else we noted that most Hurricanes had the ejector style exhaust, while most Spitfires had the 6 stub exhaust. Extra thrust, one wonders how.

27 litres at 3000rpm produces a lot of exhaust.
If my sums are right its 2.25 litres of very hot gas 25 times a second from each cylinder.

It appears most Spits up to the MKV had the 3 pipe each side version with either round or fish tail ends.
From the MKIX onwards a 6 stack each side version was used.

In 1942 NACA tested their own design with no less than 12 separate stacks on each side (presumably one for each exhaust valve) which improved the top speed by a further 6mph over the standard 3 pipe ejector exhaust.

I remembered this sequence from the film and thought "You can tell it was just a mock up".

The far side of the fuselage is not there at all!
