HOBBY LOBBY TELEMASTER 66 was created by Ex-Member
I picked up a part built kit yesterday of this aircraft.
The fuselage had been started but nothing else had been touched.

Now Garry said i should build it as a break from hurricanes today.
So i started at 10am this morning.

Ran over all the joints in the fuselage and fitted the bottom plate under the engine/tank area.
Not putting the tank cover on as i need to make that a removable panel for the battery. (yes grumps it is going to be electric :P :P :P )

Started on the main wings next.
Had to cut a few new ribs as some where missing and a couple were broken, not a big deal though.
Both halves are now constructed and once the glue dries i will be joining them together.
Now it was designed to have full length ailerons but i have decided to cut a 1/3rd out of each one and convert them to flaps.
I have one question, as the wing is supposed to be just covered with material (tissue, solafilm, you get the idea) would it be better to part cover with sheet first and just leave the center section open construction. i am thinking of extra strength in the wing.

pictures will be on tonight.

right coffee now and then back to the hard graft of the tailplane.:cheer:

To be honest Tony, I think sheeting the wing will only add weight, the 'D' section gives the strength. Nice idea about the flaps though, when I get around to mine, I might do the same.

Do it now, you may never get another chance

Why not use 'tex on the wings, rather than film, it is not a great deal heavier, but a lot stronger.

if you are calm and collected when all about you are going berserk - you've missed something important!

I agree with kippy , Tony, the wings do not need sheeting . All you will do is add weight to what seems an already heavy model.

If I was adding flaps I would set them 2/3 flap, 1/3 aileron.
I know its not very fashionable to have small ailerons but its the outer 25% that provides the majority of the roll control, unless of course you are prop hanging!
This seems to have flaps 50/50

it has no d section sheeting in the design anyway.
so i will sheet the wing from the l/e back to the main spar then film the rest.

so 50/50 on the flap/ ailerons then.

think i could cut some more holes in the fuselage to lighten it a bit more ??

this is all i managed to get done today. :(

"All you got done today"???? - bloody hell Tony - if I could build that fast - and accurately - I'd be more than happy - we don't call you the Master Builder for nothing!

Your Telemaster is entirely different to mine - and I might add you've got more of the model together than I have - already! As you've undoubtedly noticed the fuselage has no resemblance to mine and the wing is very different too. Looking at the photos I'd agree you need to sheet the top and bottom back to the main spar - "D" section it as it looks like it will flex and probably fail if you don't. I've read a few accounts of failure in the wing on hobby lobby kits and looking at that wing I understand why! I'd be inclined to sheet the centre section of the wing right back to the trailing edge as well and make sure the dihedral braces are adequate for the job. The reports I've read suggest the dihedral brace is the cause of a lot of the wing failures.

Pity you aren't going to use the PAW(?) diesel but I think it would be a little under powered anyway - as you said - it could be a heavy model with that lumping great ply fuselage. PLEASE NOTE! This admission does NOT constitute an endorsement of *lectric power! :P :P :P

the two dihedral braces round the main spar are 5mm ply and only 2 mm ply on the leading and trailing edges, so extra strength will need to be built in i think.

might just as well sheet the whole wing in 1/16 balsa and be done with it, wont add much more weight.
stick a big leccy motor in with a 4s battery and eric's ya uncle and beard's your aunt. :P

should cope with my windy field a bit better.

I think you'll be surprised at how much heavier a fully sheeted wing will be. After you've sheeted the centre section some glass cloth epoxied on may not go amiss.

well weight is good. :P :P :P
i am definitely going to sheet the front back to the main spar as it needs some strength in the wing.
maybe just a strip along the t/e to give the covering something to fix too, then some capping strips on the ribs, cover and finish.

started the sheeting today.
got the strips on the t/e done.
the underside of the d section, i need to leave the top of the d section open to run the servo wires through.
temporarily fitted the flaps and ailerons so i can work out the servo positions.

been a slow day.

between hurricane bits i have managed to get:-
aileron sevo's mounted and working.
flap sevo's fitted and working.
started running the wires through the inside of the d section.

need to sort out my tx for the flap settings yet and change the channel the crow breaking works on, i would like it to work the flaps so i can use them for breaking as well as landing flaps.
