You could say that Tony is defying the trend! :P

Tony
Depron would certainly work at that size. It would be lighter (and cheaper) so would need less power which would save weight so it would be lighter..........

The only problem going too far down that route is it ends up flying slower and gets thrown about more in turbulence which tends to limit the maximum wind speed it is practical to fly in.

well i decided to crack on with a balsa version for now.

take 1 sheet of 3mm balsa and some offcuts of 3mm lite ply and 1 hour later.............. :P

i said it was not going to be scale didn't i, the idea is do do it as simply as poss but still make it look roughly like the intended aircraft.

take some 6mm balsa offcuts and make the fin and rudder up.

then take some more, glue together and carve the canopy.

glue 5 bits of 6mm together and carve into the gut turret and the tail fairing and we have a defiant. :P

need to sit down and draw the tailplane next, that will be solid 6mm as well, then i can look at the main wing. :P

I thought you were supposed to draw the plan before you build it. :P :P :P

I don't! I build a model, then if it works, I draw around the bits. If it doesn't fly very well, there usually aren't enough bits to draw around! [badass]

if you are calm and collected when all about you are going berserk - you've missed something important!

sat down and cut all the wing ribs, spars this afternoon.

pin the bottom spar down and glue the ribs on, remembering to angle the root rib for the dihedral.

then glue the top spar, leading edge and aileron spar.
build the second wing panel in the same way.
join together.

test for fit.

then join to bits of 6mm together and cut the tips out.
glue on and leave. will shape them once the sheeting and cap strips have been fitted.

stuck now as i need to order some more 1.5mm balsa wood.

managed to scrape together some scraps of 1.5mm and almost sheeted the top of the wing.
needs the trailing edge and cap strips to complete the top.
