This another Dumas kit. I had built one a few years back and my granddaughter took it home for her bedroom. i like this plane so i  went and bought 2 more, this one is 18" and  the other one is 30"..this model is not a hard build although the guy wires and the landing gear test your nerves. not much to show yet, When Dumas packages their kits they fold the plans and tissue tightly, the fold creases really bug me. i use my wife's clothes iron to level out the paper before starting. i will give an update once i am back at the table. life stuff to do for a few weeks.
thanks

That's the trouble with this magnificent obsession, life gets in the way!

To fill in the time until my Dumas Lysander arrives I've started on a Fairey Gannet based on the KeilKraft kit I bought on ebay.
I've photocopied the balsa (my printer has a flat-bed scanner so the balsa doesn't have to go through the rollers) onto an A4 self-adhesive label which I've sliced up & stuck to a balsa sheet so I can use it as a stencil to cut through.
It also strengthens the parts where the grain may cause them to split.
The kit drawing is larger than A3 (I can only scan up to A4) but by folding it I can produce separate A4 sheets for each wing. The fuselage is longer than an A4 sheet but by joining a front & back I can get the whole.
This saves the original drawing from being spoilt by being worked on. The KK drawings are only loosely folded so the creasing isn't pronounced & they are back in the box now.

If you arrange your plan copy 'pages' with a small overlap on each 'join', you can get an accurate shape without having to fiddle about trying to get edges to line up.
Bear in mind that genuine original KK plans weren't printed on the most stable of papers, so there might be small errors between the plan and the parts! The plans weren't expected to last for 50 years!

if you are calm and collected when all about you are going berserk - you've missed something important!

My only grumble of the KK Gannet was it ended up heavy for its wing area. Partly because of the heavy balsa supplied but also the number of formers & stringers in the fuselage required to give the shape.
Mine ended up as an electric "round the pole" plane. Flew well enough.

At least the high revving motor could turn a scale(ish) home made prop!

The balsa is printed sheets from an old kit I bought on Ebay. I photocopied it onto an A4 self adhesive label, stuck it onto some balsa sheets & used it as a stencil to hand-cut around.
I've been working on the Dumas Lysander today & been having problems with it. I'll post details when I make progress to where I want to be.

And like conversatons in the clubhouse - we start off on one thing, and end up on something totally dissimilar!

Some web sites don't allow it at all, for me, it's okay, it gives us a 'clubby' feeling.

Do it now, you may never get another chance

i finally got started on this model.
the lazer cut sheets of balsa having the burnt marks, i quickly sanded with 320 sandpaper while they were still attached to the sheet. then before gluing anything  i sanded the edges slightly.
i have the sides glued up.

It looks like a nice neat build.
Was the engine a moulded plastic bit & were the curved balsa bits at the front ready formed?

The laser cut sheets look cleaner than on my lysander.
These are the sheets from a VMC Tiger Moth I've just bought on Ebay. There is no scorching, just some contact burns on the reverse side.
Dumas seem to use much fewer tabs than VMC.

How are the sheets held in a laser cutter? Is it a vacuum bed?

the engine is all pieced together from balsa and cut dowel rod. it is a bit of fiddling.

i don't know what is up with Dumas models the scorching seams to be getting worse. it is a pain. i have another brand coming . from Dare models. lets see how it looks.
