Time for my input.

A building board needs to be flat and stable. It needs to easily accept pins but hold them tight. If it has a 'sacfificial layer' it becomes a cutting board, and will not be suitable for building on. Cork will be too weak to hold the pins in place and may even crush too easily making hollows in the board.

My personal preference matches Alan's in that I use various sizes of 1/2" blockboard for building as it adequately covers all my requirements. For cutting I use a cutting mat similar to Tony's, but in various sizes from A6 to A1.

Your building board is a work of art Dickie, but I don't believe it'll be practical for building models in the longer term.

Thanks Klippy! The program is "Inventor 3D".
I also have a CFD (coumputational fluid dynamics) program that works with it too. This shows virtual wind flow, pressure, velocities, etc.

Of course, it's just an inexperience person's viewpoint, and probably won't work, but I think it's worth a try.
