This is my act of committal, now that i have started this here, I will have to finish it.
I know we don't really do drones here but hey-ho, I'm admin :woohoo: and you lot are now my only source of knowledge.
Sorry Klippy if I've put it in the wrong place, slap my wrists and let me know where / if I need to move it.

I'll start with just a few pics of where we got up to and the mess he's left me with. The selfish bar-steward. :silly:

Funny story to these ESC's.
Dad had been working away wiring up the power board. When I came to visit he was excited to show me his workings.
"So i've wired this through here, then onto the control board. Here look..." -
*plugs in LiPo*
The control board lights up and seconds later an ESC is smoking worse than Dad did. "SHIT!"
He hadn't connected the ESC's to the motors yet and the exposed end were touching

Just goes to show. No matter how experienced you are - a big mistake is only a little bit of over excitement away.

I have a drone myself, although it's never flown, there's always something wrong! Using separate ESC was my first problem, they all seem to have different low throttle points. I bought an 'all in one ' driver from RC geeks. It has 4 x 3 wire outputs all on board, on test all was fine, I put the props on and one output promptly went tits up! I've bought another from Banggood but I've yet to try it.

Do it now, you may never get another chance

Trying to start four engines is a pain, too! One is bad enough! [badass]
I think you are meant to have a very long silicon tube, and leave the fuel tank on the ground, so you can see how much is left.

No Eric, silicon is no good with diesels ( surely that's what Phil planed to use?), Mike, if you need a hand with this project I'll volunteer to make the fuel tank, got a lovely mustard tin here :)

balsa is best.

I know that cheap plastic fish-tank air-line is melted by diesel (and petrol). ((Guess who drained a small petrol tank into a plastic measuring jug - once! The bottom is still glued to the concrete floor!))
Trouble is, you can't really go into a pharmacists, and ask for 100 metres of small bore rubber tube! You're liable to be arrested!

I believe some of the bigger 'commercial' quads do use separate ESCs but then most of quad accidents so far recorded by the AAIB have been through an ESC failure!
I suspect that unless you use 'quality' ESCs I would take Klippy's warning about different throttle start points seriously.
Even on my small one with a combined ESC they do not all start together and rely on the gyro to keep them in sync when under power.
Furthermore if you close the throttle too far to let it descends rapidly the fact that some props are spinning faster than others and with so little power the gyro can do nothing about it, means it 'tumbles' rather than just sinks.

What is amazing is just how much lift the big quads have using big batteries even by plane standards and a duration of an hour is not unknown. This suggests their prop efficiency is on a par with that of the average plane's wing. :woohoo:

That's about as far as my knowledge goes. Programming an Arduino flight controller is quite outside my ken. :P

Just easing myself in with some of the basic electronics of what dad has currently set up.
Bad news is, I think when he fried the ESC's he also fried the RX. Not getting any lights but definitely getting 5V from the power board. Bummer!

He's also popped the data wire out of the ESC plugs and tucked the rest away nicely. I'm guessing he means we only need the yellow.

As far as I know.
These should go in 1 to 4

I kinda want to keep this as plug and play as possible so the next job will be to find where the heck he stashed the pins to solder onto the board.

Trying to figure out what you are doing, here!
The esc's will all require volts in from the battery, and if they ALL have a bec built in - which is what it sounds like - only ONE red wire should be connected to the rx, to provide it with 5v.
All four esc's will require the data line, and the ground (black wire) connected to the rx, or they will not be fed with instructions to power up the motors.
If the ground wire is not connected, the data on the yellow cannot flow - no circuit!

if you are calm and collected when all about you are going berserk - you've missed something important!
