WELL, its that time of year, i am a member of the LMA, i have already paid my subs, all of £20 to existing members, including insurance, BARGAIN, but its not the money that bothers me, its the fact that its the club AGM next week, and i will have to join the BMFA for there is a so called affiliation to the association,
WHY is this non existant affilitaion allowed to exist? why can i not fly on my LMA insurance, which i would rather do? i know the BMFA has done loads for the modelor, and i am not a bit bothered, it galls me that the BMFA has a strangle hold over clubs, its a fact that we aproached the club comitee last year, and they refused to recognise the LMA insurance, is this even legal ??
The LMA insurance covers in every way, so, i have to pay out twice, i would rather give it to charity, it annoys me, this year, the 18 yr old limit on membership has been DROPPED by the LMA, now juniors can fly along side seniors, as long as they pass the LMA proficiency test, a GREAT move, it will be interesting to see what the future holds for both associations, i strongly favour the LMA but a lot of my flying is below 7kg, yet both associations cover over and under 7kg models daft, innit?

i have 2 sides
no you dont,
yes i do,

Alan
I can sympathise but provided a club has kept within the terms of its constitution it can set what ever rule it likes, I know I've been there!
As far as I can tell all club members have to have insurance as a requirement to be affiliated to the BMFA but the insurance does not have to be provided by them. I suspect clubs simply prefer to take the easy option though.

If you join the bmfa then you have to have their insurance, same as joining the lma, but what happens if you dont WANT to join the bmfa, as i dont? the club shoves forward this affiliation crap, hanged if you do, hanged if you dont

Monday and Tuesday evening I shall be attending the AGM of the 2 clubs I will be flying with next year. Both clubs are affiliated to the BMFA, but I will certainly bring this point up at both meetings, and report the answers I get from them on this thread.

Join the FPVUK society.

£15 -a- year. Usual modeller's insurance. No hassle.

It's cheaper to buy your insurance this way, than to buy direct from the broker. You might have to say "Adios" to your club, though.

If that is the case Bogbeagle, I cannot see the point unless you are a lone flyer. Only then, I feel, would it make economic sense.

Allan at last years LMA AGM this very subject was disscussed, the LMA had spent several months and meetings with the bmfa to address this whereby each would recognise the others insurance..the LMA members voted no!! have a word with dave J for the full storey if you wern,t there

Im not sure what you mean by "non existant affiliation", affiliation very much does exist and there are very real benefits to the club by affiliating, you can read more about the those benefits, such as the various insurance extras such as employers liability, landowner cover full committee cover etc by reading The Affiliation Partnership booklet. Conditions for affiliation are the club has a minimum of 5 members that join the BMFA through the club and that all members are BMFA members or SAA members (there is a reciprocal agreement with the SAA)
Personally in all the years I served on the committee of a number of different model flying clubs I wouldn't have done so without the extra cover provided due to affiliation and I would certainly not expect others to accept risk on my behalf within a club without those people being adequately covered, which affiliation offers. It is however completely up to the clubs and there members whether to affiliate to the BMFA and receive the very real benefits. It is not forced on the clubs at all.

Chris, i was there, and it came as a great surprise to the chairman when the members voted against it, i talked to a few after, and they just could not be bothered, they saw it as just saving a tenner, where that came from, god only knows, i suggest YOU talk to Dave J, and get the story, as for the BMFA insurance, lets see what it does this year, after the revelations we heard at the AGM, the LMA covers all the BMFA covers, why do not recognise each others insurance, i dont know (well, actually, the LMA does, for juniors have flown at events, ) i DO know that other BMFA affiliated clubs have LMA members, and have accepted the insurance from the LMA brokers, so tell me, why do i have to pay Twice? or are you saying the LMA insurance is no good?

dont need to ask DJ as i too was there, and i dont know where you read that i thought the LMA ins was no good, never mentioned it, i believe that both insurances are identical so as to whether one is better than t,other its a moot question, all i was trying to do was answer your query, as your post seemed to indicate that you had not heard of the discussions at Cosford last year,

I attended Langar AGM tonight, and as promised, asked the question. The reply was as has been posted on here, that it is an affiliation matter, and cannot be changed at this AGM, but, the constitution CAN be changed for the next AGM, if the membership so desires.

I leave the members to make of that what they want
