Supporting Snakes was created by Dean M
Hello,
Just fitted the servo tray in my four star 60, had to fit it quite far forward as the plane is tail heavy.
The distance between the servos and the first bulkhead to support the snakes is about 6" is this to far? should I glue in some kind of support closer to the servos?

Better to be safe than sorry Dean, and if it is easy to do , go ahead.

As Garry said. :) Secure it as close to the end of the outer as you can, otherwise it can bend under the air pressure when flying, and then somebody will be shouting that they've lost control! :pinch:

if you are calm and collected when all about you are going berserk - you've missed something important!

Dean - it's also important to secure the snake at intervals inside the fuselage - the longer the snake the more it needs to be supported. A snake secured only at each end will still produce control surface problems.

Thank you

I have now fitted a support closer to the servos (took all of 2 minutes  )

The snakes are glued at every bulkhead so supported the whole length.

Then you have no worries with that type of installation Dean

I hope you've glued the outers, and not the inners, to the bulkheads! :P

Kept the inners well away until the glue had dried!!!!

Just another daft question, I am using some Sullivan gold snakes so they have an adjustable clevis on each end so to me in theory the inner snake could rotate and alter the length even to a point of winding out the clevis in flight.

Is there an answer to stop this happening? I did think of putting a blob of solder on the servo end clevis, just worried i might melt the snake with the heat.

Not a daft question at all Dean. Two solutions come to mind, and I have used both.

1 there are small nuts that fit the threaded rod, but they are fiddley, and you can put two of them on one end and lock them together.

2 Get the adjustment as close as you can, then uncouple both ends, pull the snake towards the rear, and put a SPOT of locktite to secure the clevis at the rear, then wipe it off so it cant get anywhere near the outer

3 Yes I know I said 2, but there is another one. Used plastic clevises, but if you do a sliver of fuel tubing to act as a keeper is advised. T use a keeper on ALL clevises, plastic or metal. Belt and braces perhaps
