Wing & Tailplane incidence - Setting up?

Need some guidance guys. I am having a blond moment. I am building a 64" Curare from the outerzone plan - www.outerzone.co.uk/plan_details.asp?ID=5527 . Yes I know I should be getting on with the Gannet but I just wanted something quick to build. :evil:

The plan states 1 degree positive incidence on wing and on the tailplane. But reference to what?? I am thinking thrust line as the datum but that is 2 degrees down thrust. So what datum do I use to set set the fuselage up to so I can measure and set the wing and tailplane incidence? :S :S

I'm currently unsupervised. I know it freaks me out as well, but the possibilities are endless!!

The plan should show a "fuselage datum" (full size do!) and all incidences (wing, tail and down thrust etc) are related to that.
It looks like the surfaces are true symmetrical.
In this case the incidence line goes through the C/L of the wing section - a line through the mid point of the leading and trailing edges - but how you measure and set that up accurately is another matter. ;)
I presume the wing is set 2 degrees positive to the motor thrust line and the tail 1 degree negative to to the wing incidence. The actual angle of the fuselage to the airflow is not that critical but would probably look nicer set parallel to the wing incidence. :P

As a general rule it no datum marked I draw a line from the middle of the nose block to the middle of the stern post . This usually works for me

Anything will fly given enough power

Is this the pattern model? If so it will have a symmetrical section. Simply draw a chord line though the wing in the side view, extend it and draw a second line at 1 degree negative in relation to it - that gives you a datum - but if the plan is accurate you shouldn't really need to worry as the locations of wing and tail should simply conform to the drawing, ditto the t/l

I would draw the chord line of the wings and tailplane on the plan and compare them to the engine thrust line, as drawn. If they end up with the 'right' angles between them, then build to the plan. If not, adjust to suit using the wing chord line as the datum, and then build to the plan. As Q implied, it doesn't really matter what angle things are to the fuselage, you just need to get the relative angles of the wing, tailplane and thrust line correct.

I have the Hanno Prettner plan for this (read Nexus or RCM&E), no reference is made to incidence. However 2.5 to 3o side thrust is required but no down thrust. The tail plane is exactly parallel to the engine thrust line but 30mm above it. Rather worryingly the main plane leading edge is set 53mm lower than the thrust line and the trailing edge 57mm lower, that's 4mm over a 357mm length as measured on the fuselage side.
It's many years since I went to school but I think that's .65o
Should you need it I can always post pics of parts of the plan.

Something that I have never understood about the Curare (and others) is the use of anhedral on the tailplane. As it is a mite more complicated to set up than a 'flat' tailplane, Hanno must have felt that it offered some form of advantage; anyone any idea as to what?

I can't find my protractor but using direct measure it seems to be about 2 or 3 degrees

Since the Sine of the angle = opposite/hypotenuse then 4/357=0.0112. Since the sine of 1o is 0.0175 it follows that the angle of attack is less that 1o. At these small numbers I would say that 1x0.0112/0.0175 would be a very good approximation.

What I do for 'home-brews' is guesstimate the fuselage centre-line, as said above, then set both mainplane and tailplane about 2' Positive to that. (Leading edge up).
The result is, at 0' pitch (flying straight) the fuz is very slightly nose down, which to my eye looks a lot tidier than one that is dragging it's dangling bum along.

if you are calm and collected when all about you are going berserk - you've missed something important!

Speaking as a flyer, rather than a builder, I am at present flying a Curare which I bought from a chap who had built it from a plan. The model is a joy to fly, its obviously electric as I am 100% electric, fitted with electric retracts and powered with a 5s 5000mah lipo. It will do vertical rolls until out of sight.
If there are any physical measurement I could take that would help the O/P just give me a shout.
