Vibration when running? was created by Dean M
Hi,
I have been running my four star it has a used o.s 65 la with a 12x6 prop on it and an irvine spinner (one with an ali back plate)
When idling it vibrates, the tailplane vibrates quite noticeably.
The prop and spinner seem to balance nicely.
Is it anything to worry about?

Cheers
Dean

It's obviously better to get rid of any vibration as it puts a strain on the airframe & engine bearings.
Try it without the spinner & see if that's the problem.
If that doesn't work we'll start a process of elimination.

Pol.

I just own the forum .... you guys make it great thanks.

Vibration is BAD. As Pol said, it puts unnecessary stress on the airframe. It can even shake any nuts, bolts, screws, etc, loose, or even off.
No single-cylinder reciprocating engine can be perfectly balanced, but the manufacturer gets it as close as possible.
What kind of balancer have you used on the prop and spinner?
Is the hole n the prop true, or slightly cockeyed?
Same for the spinner.
Does the point of the spinner wobble about visibly when the engine is running? (I don't mean is it loose!)

if you are calm and collected when all about you are going berserk - you've missed something important!

Thanks for the advice

Tried it without the spinner and it was exactly the same took the prop off and the hole doesn't look right, it looks slightly oval, only have myself to blame I used a drill bit to enlarge the hole instead of buying a proper reamer
so think i need a new prop

And buy yourself a stepped reamer!:) Then you can't go wrong!

Do it now, you may never get another chance

looking at the prop fitted on the engine it does look like it isn't sat centrally would this cause that amount of vibration? Or could ther be a problem with the engine? I have also noticed that where the prop sits on the shaft it doesn't sit on the plane portion but on the threaded section is this ok? The vibration is so bad it almost bounces about on its wheels.

For the cost involved Dean, purchace another prop, ream it out to the correct size , or use the correct supplied insert, and try that. If vibration stops, you have cracked it, if not you have got rid of one poss.

The prop hub needs to be close or slightly over the thread to allow the compression grip when screwed tight. Good advice re the tapered reamer and new prop.

Have a nice Day, unless I don't like you.

Quick update bought a new 13x7 graupner g-sonic prop today, the bore of these fit straight on the engine shaft so no reaming required.
All balanced nicely.......... still vibrates :(
I have read on a forum that the LA series vibrate, in particular the .65 due to its longish stroke and light weight, is this a load of arse?
May take it to the field on Tuesday and show the chaps down there and see what there thoughts are.
Dean :(

That doesnt ring true, but without seeing the set up it is difficult to give a valid reply. See what the lads at the club say, and report back. Im curious

Are you running the engine with or without the spinner? If with, take the spinner off and try it. It is possible that having the spinner on, with the previous prop, has distorted it, so that although it is static balanced, it is not rotating balanced.

All single-cylinder engines have some vibration, so it could also be that your fuselage is fairly flexible, and making the visible vibration worse as it waggles about.
What you could also try is running the engine with a smaller prop, to see if it is torque pulses that are making the tail end wag, rather than off-balance vibration. By putting a smaller prop on, you reduce the twisting load on the fuselage each time the piston fires the mixture in the cylinder.
