Somehow I seem to have found myself with two new fun-flies added to the fleet. First off is a Weston UK Cougar 2000 fitted with a new ASP36A, second is a used Panic (foam wing version) to which I've strapped a new ASP52.
Both have been designed with the engine mounted with the cylinder 45 degrees down so that the silencers run under the fus. In both cases this puts the carb on a level with the bottom of the tank because of the small cross section fuselage that is only just big enough to hold a small tank.
WHY DO THEY DO THAT? OK, I should have run in the engines on the bench before trying to set them up in such a daft position, but instead I've spent the best part of two flying days fiddling with them trying to get a compromise mixture setting that will run a tank through. Both models have plenty of power at full throttle, but transition is distinctly rough. Have you ever tried flying one of these flat out for a tankfull? It's not good for the underwear!
If they don't buck their ideas up soon I'll have to see about remounting them level with the tank and be laughing stock of the fun-fly world. That'll teach them.

And yes, I could have stuck boringly reliable electric setups in them, but where would be the fun in that?

Hmmm.....I've got a Cougar 2000 with the Weston UK -36Ti in it that I bought from their shop in 2005. The motor's mounted at 45 deg as you say Rob, but I've never had a moments trouble with it either in setting up or running. She starts first time every time on a hand flick with the throttle at idle and runs sweetly throughout the flight. - maybe you have another issue with the engine?

The only bit I didn't like on the model was having the tank in an open bay in the fus next ot the radio gear. I gave the inside and outside of the front fus liberal coats of sanding sealer and fuel proofer before I assembled the model, but I would have preferred to have the tank in a sealed compartment separate from the radio gear, just in case of leaks.

2 class one wins, 2class one 2nd places, 1 class one third place, 1class two 3rd place, all class ones where high tech fun flys, all used OS 32fx motors, all mounted as you say, but with weston genesis throttle pipes, class 2 was a standard cougar, but same mounting, all had no trouble once set up, throttle response was instant, it had to be  mounting this way is pretty standard, and i think the best way of doing it, but on my paniic, the motor was upright, but with a dirty great power pipe running from the rear exhaust irvine  in the fun flys, we used kavan tanks, cos they had grooves down the side, to faciiate control runs the throttle servo, a mini, but a fast one, was side mounted, on the floor of the fuzz,

i have 2 sides
no you dont,
yes i do,

I've been through plenty of models with inverted engines and never had any bother setting them up, maybe it's because these are both brand new engines? I've got another ASP52 in a reduced size KwikFly, that one settled down after the first couple of tanks and runs a treat now. I don't remember it being particularly sensitive to the idle mixture when it was new, maybe I should swap that one with the Panic so I'm starting with a known good setting?
You want inverted running a pipe? MVVS90,14*8, 80dBa @ 7M

ok, forget that then - seem it's not uploading pictures using win7?

nope, still no good. You'll just have to imagine a retro aerobatic job with a pipe along the side

just to put a cap on this one, another couple of tankfulls and they're settling down a treat. Good throttle response and the little 36 in the Cougar wil accelerate it straight up even on a standard silencer. The mixture still needs a final tweak before it will run the tank dry but it's 100% better already. These recent ASP engines seem to need more running in than previous ones I've had.
