So I've gone and bought a new in box Evo 35GT at a fraction of it's original rrp, this being essentially a rebadged MVVS 35. It comes with a 10mm(?) plug with matching spanner, a 4.8v ignition module and no silencer.
So - how to keep the noise down without breaking the bank - HK manifolds and cans or are they a waste of money? Are any Pitts style silencers worth using? What about inlet trumpets/filters?
This engine will ultimately go in a Maher's Thunderbird once I've built it, so it's got a big radial style cowl to hide in.

My silencers generally cost half the price of the engine, if i can, i will use cannisters, these are available from various outlets, along with manifolds, ive just bought a dle 35 ar, engine was £225, silencer was another £90, I also run pitts types, but they are not quiet, but very very convenient, thing to remember is, although petrol engines are generally more acceptable to the ear close up, the noise carries much further than whiny glow engines,

Thanks Alan. Yes, the Pitts type are very appealing as it would save altering the forward fus to fit a can, but not if it means I get banned from everywhere. I guess I need to look at a few systems to see what can be made to fit. No rush though as the Thunderbird will be my winter build.

Is it a kit build? If so, go the cannister route, cut out circles from the formers, exit through the bottom of the fuzz, Its easier to do n the intitial build, rather than trying to retro fit a system

Yes, it's a kit. I shall have to dig the plan out to see where to go in to miss it's vitals, though the size of the Tbird there aught to be plenty of room. One of these days I'll clear the board of repairs so that I can start building. Is there any preference with petrols as to upright, inverted or sidewinder, or is it totally irrelevant? Inverted would probably be easiest but is there any danger of oiling up the plug that way? I'm pretty certain my BSA Bantam didn't run well inverted back in the day

All mine are mounted inverted, no probs, drop it in at an angle, and you may be able to route it down the middle of the lower fuzz, getting it as low as possible, so there is ample room to get it away from the tank, which, by the way, can be mounted inboard, to take advantage of the pump fitted to the carb,

they're already familiar as I've got the Evolution 10GX, but that's pretty much a glow engine with a spark plug, it's got a non-pumped carb and relies on exhaust pressure to the tank. It also needs 25:1 mix so isn't as clean as I'd hoped it would be. Tugs a 68" Frog Mustfire around quite nicely though.

I love the looks of them, but I do have a niggling worry that it might not fit in the back of a Focus estate . I had to buy that to get the King Altair fuselage in, what next, a Mondeo to get a Tbird in?

Car nt see why it won't fit in a focus estate. I had a vector a hatch when I had mine and had no problem transporting it

Got a 42% giles into a corsa, just by removing the rudder, focus should be ok, just make the wing in 2 halves,

Why wouldn't it fit into a afocus estate?

You do realise that the rear seats WILL fold down, don't you?. :P :P :P

the Altair fuselage is 78" long, the Tbird instructions reckon it ends up 86", and that extra 8" makes it a close fit. Especially as I always load at least three models for a day out.
And yes Owen, that is with the rear seats down :silly:
