Ray Monks, RIP

Just learned that Ray has died aged 90 after a short illness. Thankfully he stayed bright to the end. Ray was the only UK flyer to represent GB at World Championships in F1A, F1B, F1C, and F1D, and I doubt anybody anywhere else in the world can point to such an achievement.

What a wonderful Free Flight man he was for so long.

I appreciate this is an old thread and old news.
I just wanted to post a memory of Ray Monks I had. Around 1980, as a 14 year old obsessed with building and trying to fly free flight models I came across Ray Monks flying and trimming an F1C model in Sutton Park, Birmingham. I had no idea who he was, but I got chatting to him, and watched him fly his model. An impressive sight to a 14 year old boy seeing an F1C in action. On one of the flights his model DT’d into a tree. He couldn’t climb the tree, so I ended up climbing up and retrieving his model for him . I spent all day chatting and watching him fly. He was a nice chap and very patient with an inquisitive young lad asking lots of questions ! Only a month or two later did I spot his picture in Aeromodeller magazine and recognised him.
