The "lard tubs" are Miracle Margarine containers Tony - they are approx 6" x 4" x 3" - ideal for storing all sorts of stuff like servos, Rx's, and other little bits - just write the contents on them with a black marker pen. - I don't know about next week - my building speed is a lot slower than yours. Now maybe if I tried to build 4 at once ???? - nah -

A little bit of progress. The rudders and elevators are hinged and pinned in place with toothpicks. Next I start the wing - gulp!

While Tony is taking a break from building his magnificent example - and Blackbird is fooling around with blow torches I got all motivated to dig my own humble example out from the back of the hangar where it has been sitting gathering balsa dust for a few months.

As quite often happens when a project goes on the back burner parts have gone missing, photos have disappeared into the same black hole that traps my socks and the project it's self has suffered some hangar rash. Never the less I did find some of the ribs and stuff to restart the wing - the part that brought me to my knees before.

People who might have followed this thread in the past will remember that my Lancaster is a mere 90 inch wingspan and is being built from an old plan that features foam wings and a brown paper covered ply/foam composite fuselage. Me - being the pain in the arse that I am decided to modify things to use a more conventional and classic build - in other words I decided to scrap all the foam and use balsa/ply through out.

Yeah - well - that meant a complete redesign and I've used the basic outline of the full size plan and changed every thing else. Model is now being constructed from Balsa - Ply. Redesigning the wing meant a complete change of everything including servo placement - adding extra servos - redesigning the engine mountings and nacelles and SCRATCH building a set of retracts!

Oh - I'm also using PROPER model aircraft engines - 4 x 30 Saito 4 strokes. In a couple of days I'll have some photos and a proper update on construction.

I wasnt on here when this thread was last dated but really look forward to seeing this built

Well dear readers - and assorted Wizards - the contest - errr - I mean the build - errrrrrr - rebuild has started.

The first job was to get the model down from the wall where it has been hanging for months - I got it down - promptly tripped arse over head and broke it.

I picked myself up - swore terrible vengeance on that bloody Wizard who undoubtedly was the culprit who sent the Gremlins - I KNOW I shouldn't have mentioned those 4 lovely Saito 4 strokes - and surveyed the damage. Luckily not to bad and not nearly what I imagined. I knocked both fins off and put my thumb through the balsa skin just in front of the tailplane.

Luckily no damage to the fins and rudders but a good reason to use dowels when I reattach them.

Then I found some of the wing ribs - including the unfinished centre section ones and drilled them out with a hole saw - saved nearly 4 ounces!! Started to assemble the centre section.



The centre section with the inner nacelles will be permanently bonded to the fuselage -Two outer panels with the outer nacelles will be detachable. This is a very rough idea of how it will go together.



I shall press on.

that is the plan i have for the Manchester build, fix the center section permanently and slide the outer sections on.

so i will be watching how you manage it Sir.

A bit more progress - mostly fixing up the bits I broke and thinking my way through the centre section of the wing.

This time reinforcing both fin joins with some 1/4 dowel. I'll trim it off after the glue has cured.

thanks Tony. See my comments on your Heinkell HE111 thread - your job will be considerably harder than mine - the Lancaster lends itself to a rather easy solution because the dihedral break is between two nacelles - and of course there are 4 engines as opposed to two.

I am forcing myself to take a page out of the Black Wizard's book (!!!) NO GASSER - I'm NOT going electric but I am making myself write my lines - " I will not try to handle to many projects at once."

At last count, after my recent encounter with the DR1 I currently have errrr- (1) the Bird of Time; (2) The Fournier RF4; (3) The Texan/Harvard to Wirraway conversion; (4) 2 helicopter rebuilds - (yes I bent one); (5) The Powerhouse crash rebuild; (6) The Phoenix crash rebuild; (7) the Mosquito build; AND This Lancaster that has been around for some time now. I seem to approach it - and the Mosquito - in fits and starts! - a flurry of activity and promises to myself to GET ON WITH IT followed by a period where it hangs on the wall and I try to avoid looking at it - I KNOW it will give me an accusing look!! I will NOT mention those other small jobs - a bit of covering here - a new fuel tank there - an undercarriage repair - a loose engine mount that needs fixing. I refuse to count those!

ANY way - bugger confession time - you lot will only laugh anyway - BUT - I wonder how many others on this forum have the same problem - I keep telling myself it's only a hobby and - -- BULLSHIT !!!! - IT'S A FRIGGING OBSESSION ISN'T IT???? - Err yeah - now - the Lancaster ; I've done a little bit more - finally go around to shaping the nose of the fuselage and I've started to work out how I want to fix the centre panel of the wing to the fuselage. No - I have done it yet - but I'll post some detail photos as soon as I figure it out.
