Multi purpose design

I was sitting at the table building a kavalier wing when the thought struck me.
"why do you have to build 2 aircraft when learning to fly, a high wing to start with and then a low wing to progress with"

So my brain after lack of sleep came up with the "multi purpose airframe"
You have one airframe that can take wings in different positions.
on top for training and then underneath for the next stage, using the same wing.
then i thought hang on! you could also use the top and bottom wing positions to make a biplane using the same fuselage.

i lay awake in bed till 4am thrashing out the design in my head and will be starting on the prototype in the next few days, just need to wait for some balsa to arrive.

keep watching this space.

lack of funds to buy materials, the scrap bin can only go so far.

You get some great ideas Tony, but I sometimes feel you take too much upon yourself, & this would get me depressed to hell....... Well it does get me depressed because I do the same,.... just not with modelling.
We chatted about this idea last night on "Live Chat" & I think it would be great to have a modular model that could serve several purposes.
You must agree though that the design of this will take a lot of work, so ask yourself if you have the time at the moment?
You need to get moving on it before someone else jumps on the bandwagon .... but do you think you should clear some of your workload before you take on any more?
What supplies are you short of .... I can't offer much myself at the moment because I'm scrounging to get this tent at the Nat's .... but I'm sure all the lads would pitch in a bit because we all get pleasure out of your threads.
I'll do my part ... just let us know what you're stuck for.

i started the thread so i would have a record of the idea with a date just in case some one does steal it.


cut the wing ribs today apart from the 2 ply ones needed for the cabane/suspension mount.
waiting for some ply.
will have to build the wing upside down on the board when i start it.
cant start the fuselage until i know how wide the gap is going to be between the cabane uprights will be.

I'll send off a few sheets & if everyone follows suit you'll soon have loads & nobody will feel the pinch.
This may be an Old Wives tale but it has a ring of truth & is a story my dad told me when I was a kid.
Some brainbox wanted to start a company manufacturing crisps, but he didn't have the money to get started.
He posted a competition in the local press for the biggest potato .... entries could not be returned obviously.
He may have had to pay out a small prize for the biggest entry ..... but by Christ he had enough spuds to start his business.
It could well have been the founder of Smiths Crisps for all I know ... it could be a fairy story.... but it's food for thought & a great story. .
Who's willing to send Tony a sheet of balsa? .... If that's not practical, stick a pound coin in an envelope & post it to him.
I don't class this as begging. We all enjoy this forum & all I'm asking is that we chip in & pay about the equivalent of a couple of daily newspapers. .... Tony provides far more entertainment for us with his builds.
Please don't see your arse with me for asking this Tony .... I'm the boss & I'll have to moderate you if you do.
If that doesn't work I'll let Garry or Klippy loose.

Never seen it with the biplane option, but have seen it with high/low wing, may have been on Outerzone or one of those CDs with "thousands" of plans.

The biplane option certainly adds a lot to the variations, and to the complications.

I remember something like a super 60 that had high and low wing options, but it was so long ago and I doubt it was 'modular' like Tony's idea. It was probably more like one or the other but not interchangeable. (I could be wrong though....quite often am)

There has been one commercially more recently, called a switch or swap or something similar, but it did not have the biplane option either.
