Kalt Space Baron Heli Assembly and Setup

I decided to start a new thread for this build and hopefully it will stay on thread. hint, hint. The "Moron" thread has sort of gone off subject but it's to much fun to ask Garry to clean it up - it is a perfect proof that there are other bloody Morons besides myself on this forum.

OK Nuff said - the Kalt Space Baron Build thread -

The firs thing I noticed is that building a helicopter is VERY different from building a fixed wing model - the balsa knives, the coping saw, the glue, the sanding tools, the pins and all the rest of my trusty arsenal could just as well have been thrown in the bin ! Even the perfectly flat building board is not absolutely necessary.

So - it's more like putting something together from a Meccano or similar construction set. The tools required consist of a small assortment of screw drivers - a small spanner or two, a vernier caliper, a dial indicator and the ability to read the fractured English of a Builders Manual. Luckily said Builders Manual is amply illustrated.

The model had been previously assembled but was broken down into sub assemblies for transport via Australia Post. It arrived in a large cardboard box that had thankfully been packed by some one who knows just how much Posties throw stuff around. It arrived battered but unbroken.

First job was to re assemble the main body and ensure every nut and bolt was tight and that the engine, main rotor shaft and associated gears were all aligned correctly. I also screwed on the skids.

Then the tail boom needed to be added and the tail feathers fixed and aligned. It's a good idea to make sure the tail rotor blades have enough room to clear the tail feathers and that the tail boom is correctly located all the way into the main body. The Manual suggested the head of the shaft should go into the body a distance of 54 mm - i found after several tries that it was correctly messed at 52.5mm.

Then comes the main rotor head. This is a fiddly job and requires several adjustments to get every thing aligned and checking the main rotor shaft with a dial indicator for any sign of run out is essential. Connecting up all those links is a small nightmare in it's self - count them ! there are 16 and every one is articulated.

OK - that's the easy part - the next installment will be balancing and fitting the main rotor blades and installing and connecting up the servos and the bloody gyro. After that it's a matter of setting everything up correctly - stay tuned.

Well I'll be damned - it worked !!!

Damn - tried to load the next batch of photos and text about 20 minutes ago - no bananas - got some sort of error messages and my computer crashed !!!! Will try again tomorrow I guess.

Got the rotor blades balanced and fitted - screwed up the photos though, Oh well - here's the end result - and I've got the servos in place. Now all I need is to fit a gyro - Any Suggestions or advice please - Apparently I need a holding heading (HH) type and it should be connected to a digital servo because of the response times.

Please remember I'm a complete bloody beginner when it comes to RC Heli's but I did try to include as clear an illustration as possible of the PROPER engine installation.
