Tony Nijhuis B-17

Well the Kavalier only needs covering and servos etc. fitting and the Puppeteer is coming along nicely (may have to put it to one side soon due to no engine )

So I have got out the plans and cnc pack for my Tony Nijhuis B-17. It is 72" and for four electric motors ( my first go at the dark side)
I had the Plans copied at Staples so I can keep the originals un soiled.

Plans on the bench!




and I have blutacked the original plan to the wall for easy reference




hopefully some more photos later on with actual wood glued together!!!

when you look at a plan like that is there a set starting order to what you begin to build or is it personal preference- eg fuz v wings?

I would prefer to be a storm trooper!!

I think it is down to personnel preference as to where to start I tend to start with the wings, as I think the fuselage is the most interesting bit therefore I am more likely to stay interested and have something looking like an aircraft at the end.

Ok I have hit on a problem already. Will try and explain the problem,
The very last rib has cut outs for the upper and lower main spar, the rib has been cut out exactly to the plan, but the cut outs for the spars are to shallow. here is a picture of the ribs, sorry it's a bit blurred but you can see what I am getting at,

As you can see W17 has cut outs large enough for the spar to sit in fully but W18 as you can see the cut outs are at least half the depth.



Here is the spars at the wing tip W17 is glued on, as you can see the spar almost touches where W18 should go.



Now if I put W18 in as it is this is what it looks like




As you can see it lifts the upper main spar off the last few ribs and just looks all wrong.
I can only think of either cutting out the rib more where the spars go or cutting notches in the spars.
Any other ideas? Am I missing something?

the spar has to be tapered at the end.
it is the same with the TN lanc i am building.

Thanks BB would appreciate any pics you have, as I have only found a three build threads on the B-17 two on RCME neither has many pics and there is no end product pictures or info.
There is a good build thread on RCMF but most of the the photos have been deleted

I have tapered the spar now and it is perfect Thank you.
Have glued on the false leading edge and trailing edge along the aileron cut out. bit of sanding then I will start the nacelles.

That would be a fairly large plan to have copied, what do they charge at Staples? i have a 1.4scale FW190 D9 plan i need copied getting some build threads on here, isnt there??? looking forward to this one

That sounds really interesting look forward to seeing that being built. I hope to get to the skill level both flying and building to built some large warbirds.
From what I remember the plans cost about £3-£4 a sheet to copy that was the largest they could do.

i will take it over, and ask them, i only want sections done, i have a laser cut short kit, i have 57 parts i need to cut out, the idea being, copy the plan out, cut the shape of the part out, stick it to wood, cut the part out, i am not building it, my mate Jonesey is, i am doing the finishing, and making the retracts, unless i get a reasonable price for them from a machinist, i only have dinner times to do my own stuff, take eons not being started until next winter, but it soon comes around
