3 weeks ago I flew the Bog Dragon but its endurance flight was terminated after 15 minutes as the motor was making a distinct whine.
Being 4 years old and well used I assumed it was likely a bearing but the motor still turned over by hand very smoothly with absolutely no play.
Considerable investigation pointed the finger at the ESC. The motor noise actually being electrically generated. This was not an entirely a surprise as the motor could draw just over 40A at WOT and it only had a 30A ESC!
It only lasted as long as it did because not only did it have a large fingered heat sink in the air stream but full power was only ever used sparingly and then for no more than 5 seconds at a time!
Not surprisingly the replacement 50A ESC is a bit bigger however space inside the Big Dragon fuselage is very limited.
How to flood the ESC alround with air but without adding excess drag or weakening the small cross section Depron box fuselage.
The chosen solution was to 'suspend' the ESC in a 'cross duct'.
The ESC is still within the fuselage cross section, in the correct orientation between the motor and the battery for minimum cable lengths and does not significantly reduce the strength of the fuselage.
To further increase the air flow over the ESC opposite facing inlet /exhaust covers will be added to each end of the cross duct.
In truth the only reason I spent time repairing the Big Dragon is it is my oldest Depron 'own design' plane (2010), does not take up much room to store and it still flies very nicely!

if you are calm and collected when all about you are going berserk - you've missed something important!

Almost flat calm this morning so the revised Big dragon was tested but the video camera did not record!
Flew it again late in the afternoon by which time there was a bit of wind and it was very turbulent.
The edited video.
The new ESC gave no trouble. It is still very docile and pleasant to fly.
