Elf Bi-Plane (Pol's got a Ben Buckle kit to finish)

A while ago one of our club members, (Dave Burton) passed away. I knew Dave from the RCM&E forum, he took over as moderator when I left. He also gave me an old trainer he had when I returned to the hobby after having my first heart attack.
The club held an auction of his modelling gear to raise money for charity, this is one of several items I bought.
I'm not sure how long it will take me to pick up where Dave left off and get this model finished, I've got so many things on my plate that I don't get much time for building, but if I start this thread now I might have the incentive to find some time for it rather than have it sitting on the shelf for the next few years..... Dave was a great guy, I want to make a good job of this and fly it in his memory.
It looks a lovely model and I've never built or flown a bi-plane before. I feel a bit nervous now when I think of all the hours I'm going to spend on it, ..... then I've got to maiden it!

That's going to keep you busy! What are going to power it with?

That'll fly a treat Phil, Mr Buckle produces nice kits although sometimes the wood selection leaves a little bit to desire, can't make out if that's the 48" or 60" version? the 48 will be great on a small diesel.
Edit: just learnt to read!!! it's the 60".....

I haven't decided yet Crash, I'm all electric at the mo', but I don't think I'll be able to incorporate a battery hatch on this one without drifting way off plan and butchering the work Dave has already done building the fuselage.
It'll have to be glow but I think I'm going to love this model so I'll wait until it's nearly finished and if it turns out like I hope I'll shell out on a new 4 stroke. ..... I know they're expensive but they make a much nicer sound than a screaming 2 stroke.
I'll have to get some advice about which make engine to get, O.S. are much more expensive than say S.C., but just how much difference is there in terms of performance if they're set up correctly?
We shall see.

looked at the kit today in my local model shop, lovely kit! a paw 35 would fit a treat, old friend of mine had one ( paw) years ago when they first came out, a lovely motor, first start flick once run in, there's a guy on you tube, Brian Cox that has reviewed the entire paw range, worth a watch....

Cor! that's interesting Eric, thanks! I've had a few paws in the dim and distant past, always found them good runners, wish I lived a bit closer to the factory.

Go on Phil, you know it needs a Laser....

come on mate get the glue out and get started, whilst I've nothing against foam models or rtf there's nothing quite so satisfying as bashing the balsa, I find it very therapeutic....

Might be a little while longer sorry Paul, got to concentrate on the models that are near to flying first, I'm looking forward to reading plans again though mate.

Exactly the way I feel, just got the plan printed for my next project today ( just junior, 75% scale junior 60).
The thing I like is the fact you can build it as the budget allows, always a consideration in my case and you can choose the right grade wood for the application.

Daves' (BEB)Typhoon was on Ebay not long ago, I was more than tempted by it but unfortunately (fortunately maybe?) missed the finish of the auction, It went for a song with the retracts it had fitted however a guy from Ashby's forum picked it up and is finishing it so a good ending to the listing.
