Just Junior

Always been a fan of the original junior 60, built and flew it's larger brother "Majestic Major" years ago, had it for about 7 years and had hundreds of flights with it until a mid air with a out of control scale model totalled it ( flown by my then club chairman).
With no space now to store a large model I thought a just junior may fit the bill , it's a 75% scale model of the original 1946 J60.
After getting the plan printed via outerzone ( such a great resource) I've put scalpel to balsa and made a start on the fuselage.

Also began gathering a few bits and bobs needed further down the build, with genuine "airwheels" being ridiculously expensive now I've bought a pair of 3" du-bro wheels and tyres that I will make aluminium hub caps for to replicate the originals, also discovered that despite solarfilm products being discontinued you can still get the whole range from solarfilm direct, litespan in my opinion is without doubt the best lightweight covering ever made.

A little more work on the fuselage, bent up and attached the undercarriage, solder joints need cleaning up and I need to find some bushes for the wheels ( anyone got a lathe?)

cowl next then a bloody good sanding..

Started to "rough out" the cowl, amazing how much 3/8th sheet that consumed only to end up on the patio as shavings and dust, should have the engine Friday so there will be a lot more of it !

made a start on the tail feathers etc today, in a effort to keep the back end light I've made the rudder hollow rather than the slab of sheet the plan calls for, I plan to do the same with the elevator, paid dividends when I built the Caprice.
Tonight I'm going to try building the fin using a steamed strip.

Well the laminated fin idea was a miserable fail! Ended up building it conventionally, picked the engine up today and my props turned up from Leeds model shop ( the only place I could find that had my preferred "kavans" in stock), Elevator tomorrow then a big sanding session before I start on the wing.

Not a lot of progress sadly, the weekend got in the way!
However I have sorted out the servo tray, had to have it quite high up in order to keep the control runs reasonably straight ( throttle cable and closed loop for the rudder particularly) obviously the tank position is critical, needs to be on the CoG and in line with the needle valve, this has meant clearance above the servos is tight and it will need a yet to be made removable tray to sit on.
Hacked the cowling in order to clear the motor and that's about it....

Thanks Eric, no fear my friend, it's all due for a coat of epoxy before paint, nice to see someone actually comment, did start to think I was wasting my time......maybe I should have built it from plastic or just bought a expanded polystyrene "thing".......

What do you mean " some expanded polystyrene THING ! I am mortally wounded & you are off my Christmas card list !
I have to say (grudgingly ) it is looking very nice though.
