Time Traveller

A new challenge for me, I've been asked if I would build this as a commission, Vintage 1956 team racer.
I've been provided with the plan and a bag of bits including the bellcrank, filling valve, engine cut out and engine mounting plate as well as a set of laser cut formers.
The owner is a good friend of George Copeman and is going to send me one of Georges tuned Oliver Tigers just to check fits etc.
I know nothing about control line racing but apparently the wing can be a lot thinner and the whole model can be 5% smaller than shown on the plan and still be legal so thats what I'm going to do.

That's an interesting job.
Yes a thin wing for a control line but I am a bit surprised to see it uses a flat bottom wing section.
I don't know the rules but for speed a symmetrical section of the same thickness would create less drag.
Most flat bottom sections have a adequate lift performance but the drag rises significantly at very low angles of attack.
Of course as a commission I presume you must build as per the plan.

It has to be per plan..but the rules allow it to be 5% smaller ( apparently) I've asked the owner and he's confirmed , he's also asked me to build the 15cc tank for it and supplied the 're fuelling valve and the engine cut out, both works of art and must have cost a pretty penny...I'll post some pictures tomorrow.

I know of lots Klippy ( welcome back btw!) trouble is they go for silly money...I can ask amongst my oily friends if you like..

Edit to above, Klippy I've made contact with a guy that has both a mk3 and mk4 both new in box!! I'll pass his details over to you privately as soon as I get them.

There is one on Ebay at the moment in the US. $154 and the auction still has 5 days to go.
Russian copies cheap enough though.

For a real unmolested example you would need to pay at least 300...if it's a tuned example ( George Copeman) then it'll be 500..
George is now into his 80's and still going strong and still building engines and I've got one of his on the way to me ( only on loan but I will find it hard to resist not running it!!).

About time I posted on this one! Still no sign of a engine or current contact with the owner!?? but I have made progress ( it'll make a nice wall hanging ) first job was to make a frame from 3/8x1/2" beech, everything is built around this.

next up was the main fuse sides, took me a day to get these right, firstly I had to make a crude profile gauge to get the wing profile ( my last contact with the owner was when he sent me pre-built wing, he had it built by a guy that specializes in making them...it's a work of art..internal leadouts, hardwood edges all round and it's been impregnated with epoxy) from the gauge I could then make a template.

This allowed me to get the wing a tight fit in the sides and glue it altogether ( after about 6 dry runs and much measuring!)


next up sheeting the top..

Well this ones dead in the water, after months of no contact the guys got in touch to say he no longer wants it!! Asked him to pay for the materials and work so far and after a day of stalling he announced he can't afford it and promptly blocked me ( via WhatsApp).
I've just sold the various fittings that he supplied to another guy who told me the chaps notorious for mucking people about, models now in the bin....live and learn.
