Alfreton Indoor Freeflight + ultralight RC meeting

A new meeting has been arranged at the Alfreton Leisure Centre (5 mins from J28 M1) for "free-flight and ultra-light RC", 21st October 2-5.00pm. This is intended to cater for free-flight fliers for whom our regular indoor meetings are a bit knockabout, with a concession to ultra-light RC flown in a suitable manner that is likely to be mixable with stick and tissue models. It is aimed at traditional aeromodelling without being shy of modern developments like foam or carbon. We will operate slots if necessary.
The following is my guidance on what is invited but please get in touch if you have an idea or question.

"Fixed wing free-flight and ultra-light RC, no drones, helis or solid foam RTFs"

So, more or less any free-flight balsa model, scale or otherwise should be ok, rubber, CO2 or brushed-electric. Free-flight models tend to be self-regulating with respect to weight or size due to the hall limits. The hall is 30m x 37m x 8m high.

For RC models, coil actuator models, DelTang based, Vapor boards, etc. in self-built models (from plan or kit) should be ok provided they are flown appropriately. The only pre-fabricated models likely to be acceptable are the Vapor range plus the Ares range. Plantraco if anyone has any. Micro-Aces should be ok provided flown slowly. BMFA Scale Indoor- rules models are likely to be ok although my knowledge of these is sketchy.

What is not allowed:

•No brushless motors or separate servo models.
• No solid foam models. No Ember, 4-Sight, Extra.
•No RC rotors
These are well catered for at the regular meetings.

All BMFA welcome £10 per flyer accompanied juniors and spectators free. Please circulate the information to anyone you know who might be interested. By all means bring stuff to sell if you wish. The leisure centre is very modern with large café area, pool, gym, badminton, bowls, free parking, etc.

Nice idea for an indoor meeting, shame its a bit far for me

bring friends, share travel costs, meet friends from the other side of the country - we're called the Midlands for a reason

Minimum of 2 hrs for me too = 4 hrs over the day.

It looks like a good meeting, though, and I'll bear it in mind if you do it again...esp next year before the Scale Indoor Nats in April.

For interest, the Peterborough Club are holding 6 indoor meetings in an 8-Badminton Court hall over the winter months. I'll put up more details in a different thread if anyone is interested.

Would a longer session, e.g. all day, make any difference to anyone's attendance? Significantly more financial risk for us unfortunately. We tend to find folks have had enough/run out of planes at the regular meets after 3 hours.
Yes, please, Peterborough meetings. I need to dodge those dates if I can find another slot in the hall bookings. The BMFA Indoor scale comps would be useful too, if you happen to know them. I will look them up if not.
I think one or two may be attending Alfreton in preparation for Nijmegen (11th - 12th November).

I've just realised your event is only three hours Nigel. From my position, it's not nearly enough to justify a four hour travel. To trim and rinse out an indoor scale model I would hope for at least a six hour session.

I've posted dates for Peterborough Indoor (also three hours), a BMFA Scale Trimming meeting (seven hours) and the BMFA Scale Indoor RC and FF Nats (both about 9 hours) in a separate thread.

Ok, I read that as usually 3 hours unless exceptionally longer. I know the Manchester Velodrome were all day affairs - I'd like to know how the finances worked out to afford that. Good to have them regardless.

Not bumping (really), here's a photo of the hall taken last Saturday. Not sure about the colour scheme... but I did re-estimate the hall height. It is 9m to the curtain rail and about 1.5m above that so given its age, possibly 35 feet originally.
