WW2 sites

Hi All, each quarter I write a news letter for my club and my site covering different topics, and the next one coming up will be about RC clubs flying at old RAF Bases. So if any of you guys out there fly at the old bases and you would be willing to write a small piece about:
whats the clubs name is?
where your based?
whats the site like to fly at?
Is there any nostalgic memorabilia still there?
what was based there?

Iam looking forward to writing this piece about the sites and I would appriciate it if you can help?

I fly at 3 Mossie, all in Lincolnshire. Langar, Swinderby and Newark Showground, all WW2 airfields

club near me flies from the vickers airfield at wisley.
it was built for the valient test flights.
the viscount first flew from there as well.

To be honest if you fly at a disused airfield you would be hard put not to fly at a WWII one. There were hundreds!

Very true. They used to come back and land at the wrong one many a time as they were so close

One of my clubs is the DALLACHY model flying club which runs a website. The main Aircraft flying there in ww2 were Beaufighters. The old runways are still there, plus a few of the old buildings. Sadly a re-cycling buisiness was allowed to encroach on our flying area. The site is near to the mouth of the river Spey. We welcome most anyone.

I fly, for the time being, not from an RAF site, but one of the most famous sites you could imagine, birthplace of countless RAF aircraft, Avro Woodford, all the old Avro sheds are still there from decades ago, and have preservation status, apart from that, there are not many relics of the old site that built countless lancasters, ansons, shacks, nimrod, vulcans, but we do have on site, XM603, she was in danger of the scrapper when BAE sold the site, but she was included in the deal, we do have one place we go to and have a quiet moment now and again, the site where the RR Mk14 spitfire crashed and killed the pilot at a woodford airshow, its in the form of a very nice brass plaque embossed with the spit, and the pilots name, what does the future hold? houses, a new town, ah well, its ours for the time being,

years ago, i flew at RAF Burtonwood, now there, you could not move without booting a bit of aircraft!! but sadly, the M62 put paid to that, now all the hangars have gone, sad, innit?

One of the sites I fly from is former RAF Melton Mowbray. Originally it was used as a maintenance airfield but was taken over by transport command during WW2, then used as a Thor missile site in the early 60s.
Their is still some of the RAF technical buildings visible and blast walls for the Thor missiles.
The control tower was located near to where we enter our flying site although the tower was demolished in the 70s.

The outline of the roadway and building footings are visible as is the signals square and station ident letters.
