Where to point the aerial on 2.4 was created by THE BLACKBIRD
Talking to a man this morning in the model shop and he has flown in a lot of championships all over the world, and the subject of me loseing contact came up
He asked where do you point the aerial on the transmitter and what radio do i use, i told him Futaba now and JR before that and the aerial points up and a little to the side
His reply was ( that is where your trouble ls coming from, your aerial should point straight ahead and to the ground that way it transmits in an arc in front of you, having it pointing up it transmits over your shoulders and not at the aircraft
Having watched the jet world champs i had noticed the flyers were flying with the aerials down.
It makes sense i think so i will be flying with it pointing the same as my willy, but then it dont work to well :) :) :(

From what I understand the signal from the ariel is like a donut. All to the side and weak from the tip
Like this

Somebody called me 'pretentious' the other day.

I nearly choked on my latte.

As Dean said. It doesn't make any difference whether the aerial points straight down, or straight up, when you hold your transmitter in your flying position.
The easiest way to picture it is to imagine a ring doughnut with a stick poked through the hole.
The stick is your aerial, and the doughnut is where the signal goes - nothing from either end, and most of it out sideways - in all directions sideways!!

The same applies at the model end of things, which is why they give you two aerials, to be positioned at 90 to each other, that way, no matter what orientation the model, one or other of the receiver aerials is sideways on to the transmitter aerial.

You can have your transmitter aerial pointing sideways, if you wish (some now are built into the handle) BUT if you are flying, with the model in front of you (how else?), and turn sideways to speak to your pal, you present 'the end of the stick' to your model, and - whoops - lost it!

if you are calm and collected when all about you are going berserk - you've missed something important!

From restarting this hobby some 7 yrs ago, after a 15 yr lay off, I went straight to 2.4, and decieded on Spekky. As you know, I fly twice a week all the year round, and average 10 flights per session. From the outset , I was informed that the aerial should be at 90 degrees to the main shaft, so that is where it has been for 7 yrs, pointing to my right. In all that time, I have had 2 crashes, both of which were due to bad installation, in other words, MY FAULT. I fly at 4 different sites, and in the 7 yrs have NEVER had a radio glitch with the aerial in the position stated. Am I going to change it?? Not on your life !!!!!!!

Garry, you've said yourself that there is often nobody else there, so you aren't going to turn to your left to talk to someone!
With the aerial lying on it's side, you are still 'showing' the model the side of it, not the end, so what I put stands. :P
It's of no importance, but some of your transmitted signal goes straight up above your head, into outer space, and some of it goes straight down into the ground, but as long as the model is in front of you, that's ok.

if you are calm and collected when all about you are going berserk - you've missed something important!

Fully agree with you Eric, often there is no one there, but when there is, I talk when I am flying, cos I can, but at no time do I take my eyes off the model, and what is more important, I do not turn to the side to speak. Maybe this stems from the habit I have when driving, at no time do I turn my head to the passenger when speaking to them, in fact on a coach tour last year the driver did just that, and I told him I did not approve, and pointed out how dangerous it was. He didnt do it for the rest of the trip.

I fully agree with Eric. He is someone who HAS a reasonable knowledge of electromagnetic propogation from our Aerials/antenna. The reason I say this is because I too am a Radio Amateur, further to that I was heavily into VHF to low microwave contesting. I needed to know what my/our contest Aerials did, including phasing multiple Aerials together. I was a founder member of the Highland Contest Group and we did very well. So our equipment worked.

I did have some reservations as to the viability of 2.4 as a model control band,,,, I learned that the repeating speed of multiple digital control signals proved to be effective. This does not in any way defeat argument of the best signal pattern due to orientation of the Aerial.

Have a nice Day, unless I don't like you.

Just a side comment - As I had full control of my model at 1585 feet range, I must be doing something right (but not in the eyes of the BMFA!)
Well, my excuse is - I didn't know how high it was until it came down!

I was going to fly with my aerial pointing in front and down but the 14sg will only go straight to the front up 90 deg and then to the right 90 deg :S but i still want to fly with the end of the aerial pointing down, dont know if you can turn them from inside the transmitter

Up, down, doesn't make much difference. Remember the 'doughnut!' Only the angled 90 cm bit on the end is aerial. The rest is just a spacer. As long as your transmitter aerial is vertical relative to ground, when you hold your transmitter in your flying position, you get the best radiation pattern.
I'll not post this any more, as the argument is going round in circles.

I dont think your fully explaining yourself Eric because your quoting the end and thats not where the signal comes from..The aeriel should be sideways not vertical.
