charging small nimh packs was created by paul d
So I've bought some small capacity nimh rx packs ( 230 mah),
got a problem, not got a suitable charger, I do however have a larger charger ( 6v-1000mah) which will obviously cook them.
Someone care to tell me if I'm talking sphericals but if I put a 250 ohm resistor in parallel it'll bring the output down to 23mah? (Nice slow charge)
it's years since I did any electronics and I may have got the formula totally wrong........

You'll get a VERY hot resistor! Work out how many watt you will be dumping through it! You would also need to put a diode between the resistor and the cell-pack, or it could discharge thorugh the R if you weren't careful
Perhaps you meant series?
How many cells in the pack? A 6v input might just be enough volts to charge a four-cell.
It's a long time since I tried charging a nimh, but If I recall, they don't like a constant current charge, and you need some way of measuring end voltage, so the input tapers off as it is reached.
A proper nimh charger is only a couple of quid on fleabay.

Told you my electronic knowledge was rusty!! it's a 4 cell 4.8v nimh pack Eric, as I've said I've got a charger for my larger packs just thought I could step down the out put to suit these tiny 230 mha packs, got a link to a suitable charger? I can't find one that will slow charge them....
Oh 4 cell obviously.

Trickle charging rate for NiMh chemistry is set by the cell capacity and manufacturer recommendations can be as low as 1/300 C for indefinite charging without damage.

For a 2000mAh (AA cell?) 1/300C would be just 6.6 mA. :ohmy:

Interesting factoid.
The patent for NiMh technology was bought by General Motors in 1994 and the first generation electric vehicles used it until pressure from the petrochemical industry caused their withdrawal in the late 90s and just to ensure NiMh batteries did not come back in this application the patent was sold to Texaco in 2000.

Is it a welded pack, or four loose cells?
A normal Futaba (etc) 4 cell flight pack charges ar 50 mah x 14 hrs

Eric, without being rude I said in my original post there welded packs not loose cells! There 230 mah capacity (ie very small) I just want to be able to charge them at a rate that won't damage them..... where's Phil when you need him!! :)

Charging the 250mHr pack at the recommended maximum of 10% would be 25mA. Assuming your charger charges at 6volts, if you put your 250ohm resistor in series for charging a dead flat battery you would get an initial charge rate of 24mA dropping to 8mA as the battery passed through 4volts. I would say you'll be fine and you will never damage these new batteries of yours.

Anywhere in the circuit, say between the + charger lead and the + of the battery so all the charge current has to go through the resistor.

Power = Volts2 / Resistance, so, suppose you're dropping 6 volts across the resistor P=6x6/250 = .144watts so a small 1/4watt resistor will do the trick. You must remember that resistors are quite fragile so if you could find a wire wound of that size it would be better, but still beef up the ends of the body with some silicone sealer to allow you some lead flexibility.

Most of that will be p+p! Small resistors cost about 2p each, sold in 10's
