On another forum a 'newby' was advised to add a 50% rudder mix as "the various Cubs I have flown are reluctant to turn on ailerons alone."
Really!
This I have got to find out for myself so I aim to build a true scale 40" Super Cub using this 3 view but its rudder will be fixed! :P

Can't wait to see how it turns. ;)

Don't know about Cubs, but my Decathlon will flick-roll if I give it full rudder, and nothing else. The layout is virtually identical, but it has a touch of dihedral.

if you are calm and collected when all about you are going berserk - you've missed something important!

it will, at low speed, create drag from the downgoing aileron, this will cause a draggy tip stall, with no rudder to pick the tail up, then glue will be needed, at least use differential and give 2/3rds up, 1/3rd down using rudder assist on a turn can also be problamatic, sometimes, opposite rudder will be used to flatten a turn out, with no rudder, the wing will stall round an arc, it will come round, but i cannot be called a turn, the ass end will hang down, not having a rudder to pick it up, with a cub type, i would rather do without ailerons, than rudder

and, on the subject of C.A.R., there is no switch in the world that could, or should be used over a mark 1 finger, ailerons on a cub at slow speed should be left alone, rudder is the master, not the ailerons,

and cubs should be kept away from learners, everyone thinks cubs are nice, easy fly pretty things, they bite, and bite hard, if not used properly, or set up properly

The subject of a cub being a bad flyer must be from a bad kit or arf surely ..
The old carl goldberg cub (greatplanes now) was a great trainer with a full wing and with clipped wings extremely aerobatic..
Ive own a number of cubs in various sizes , the worst one was an arf from china .. it did do exactly what alan cantwell describes . dropping its tail making it almost unflyable by anyone who couldnt fly a turn with alieron and rudder . . It had no dihedral and clipped wings .. was over powered and required alot of incidence changing of the wing and thrust angle on the motor to tame it .. generally it was horrible ..

All my other cubs fly sweet . the clipped wing models do require rudder input on the turn
I see two common problems from guys with cubs , over powering and flying too fast ..
Alot of cheaper cubs seem to use not much more than a clark y or flat bottom wing that lifts greatly when over powered . This lifting effect in a alieron turn gives the tail drop talked of ..

Eric reported a flick roll of his decathalon when given full rudder .. could this be a slightly tail heavy plane .. do you have it balance for aerobatics or regular flying eric.. once again speed can do this too if tail heavy..
Open to you thoughts and suggestions .
Thankyou.

yes another here for no CAR it makes turns untidy,
Al surely you dont need opposite rudder in a turn this will just shove the tail down the wrong way, the rudder keeps the tail up in a turn, and i agree differential on ailerons as the down going one can give a lot of drag (think flaps) and can cause adverse tourque and it will try to turn towards the drag, i can give you the sequence for a turn on a WW1 er (DH2 aileron differential is probably 80% 20% on this, my Morane type N a few years ago was 95% 5%) the turn is predominantly rudder but wings banked slightly with ailerons then rudder fed in to get correct turn radii and to keep tail up and to stop it tucking into the turn, which it loves to do, no fuselage remember, then opposite aileron to keep the wings at a good angle but the turn is rudder, ailerons are the ballance, so a tight left turn say will be lots of rudder with almost full right aileron and the amount of aileron depends on which way i am turning with the drive being in the middle pushing it does strange things, now my 1/3 tripacer similar layout to a cub makes nice long flat turns with a touch of rudder (its huge) and a nice bit of opposite aileron, it will do the bank and yank type turns, aileron and elevator, but looks wrong and is hard work when towing, flat turns make a nicer tow!!

ive turned Daves 1/4 scale cub, intiitated the turn with CAR, and had to shove opposite in to tidy it up, cubs are deffo not good trainers, they need setting up, ive flown loads of them, the clipped wing ones are DEFFO not good trainers, for they are out and out aerobatic models, or semi aerobatic, i much prefer the clipped version,

and i did not say they fly bad, i said they ned setting up, that long wing needs help, and that help comes from the waggly thing at the back, that, and copiuos amounts of differential,

another thing about the trainer thing, no model that has all the strength taken out, and replaced with glass, wil survive the tyro flyers learning, first time it goes tits up, it will be broken around the cabin area, this is anything with glass, and not wood, not just the cub

A true scale Super Cub does not have a flat bottomed wing its actually slightly under cambered! USA 35B. ;)

This what I am using.

Ahh!! but if you have CAR dialed in then you aint putting opposite rudder in your taking some rudder off surely, this just means that the coupled rudder is too much!! God gave you twoo thumbs use em both!!

No, Barry, if anything the Decathlon is slightly nose heavy.
Admittedly it is over-powered, but once off the ground I use that clicky lever on the transmitter, that slows things down!
The main reason for the flicking is I've got a bit too much control movement. Fly it gently, and it's a pussy-cat, but pussy-cats can claw and bite! :S
I like it like that, because it keeps my reflexes awake, never knowing which way it is going to 'depart' if I get too enthusiastic on the sticks!

if you are calm and collected when all about you are going berserk - you've missed something important!

Ceejay, i never "dial " in CAR, i use me thumbs, you can get better control over the turn doing it manually, and what happens if you dont switch it out when going slow on landing? oops, i like using the rtudder control to boot the ass end round, then arrest it by giving a blip of opposite rudder, lots of fun, bet our resident ex shuttleworth pilot has made good use of his rudder (s) in this way on some of the types he has flown, !!!!

Does anyone remember when a 'state of the art' transmitter meant that you had four channels that were proportional?
