well i think it is time to offer up for consideration my model build for the winter of 2014, i know it is a long way off but lets get this bit over with.
I plan to be building a 1/10th scale (ish) version of this iconic aircraft.
1/10th scale will give me a wingspan of just on 12ft
yes 144 inches. (if i had gone 9th scale like garrys lanc, we would be 13.5ft) i am aiming for an all up weight of 25 to 30lbs.
Having searched the net like mad over the last few days and only being able to find a plan for a 61" control line version, i will be drawing up my own plans from scratch.
Hobby King do some nice double brushless contra rotating motors, so we can have that bit right.
All help will be accepted, any hints and tips will also be gratefully accepted as i will need lots of help with this one.
not sure which one to model, either the one at newark or gatwick museums.
plans will be started later this weekend i expect.
wish me luck.

I hope to cover every step of the build and not just post up pics of finished bits as i have done in the past.
First stage will be to cover how i personally will be drawing up the plans, i don't understand cad so it will be paper and pencil with excessive use of the eraser i expect.
i have a couple of 3 views, a copy of the control line plans and some images of a plan that was started then abandoned by another builder, to give me a start.
eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep.

It's not 'luck' that you need, it's more balsa and ply.

A good choice, and a good scale Tony. I will not be contributing to the build, as you do my building anyway, so may I suggest you model the Newark one. The reason I say this because that one is on my doorstep, and should you require any photos I could obtain those whenever you need them . If you decide to do this one I am still very friendly with the curator who would give me free access for something like this. Hope this helps

He will have it finished before then Sarah, and then he will be planning what to build in 2020.

I have every confidence in you Tony,
but just a point, i think your estimate of the weight is a tad low, and if it drifts toward the unholy 20kg, then inspections will be needed, or it wont be legal, and remember, on electric models, the batteries are included in the final weigh in, then there is a substantial set of up and downs to think of, ooer,

Glad to see you've gone public Tony, good luck with the build.
That's a good point Alan, but Tony does build light. Garry's Lanc might make a good comparison but remember that weight estimates should be factored by the cube of any single relative measurement.

The Lanc comes in at 24 Ib, including 4 X4s 5000 mah lipos, and that figure includes everything ready to fly . I think Tony appears to build light, I have 3 of his builds and none of them have had to have any lead added to get the C of G right . It a good point Alan, and thanks for posting it . Forewarned is forearmed .

Surely the Lanc plans will be a good starting point?

the shack was based on the lincoln which was based on the lanc.
i hope to use parts of the lanc plans to aid in the design of the new plans.

Tony - if Coventry airport is within your reach, there is a Shackleton there in almost taxying condition. There is a preservation group trying to get it back into the air, and often do engine runs. If you ask nicely, they will let you crawl all over it if you have a genuine reason, which you do. I cn't recall the Reggie number at the moment, but if you look on my facebook page, you should find the occasional link to it.
