avro shackleton mk111

Hello gents and ladies, let us start again.

My new project for 2014 is going to be a 10' wingspan avro shackleton mkIII.

In conjunction with Laser craft services , who are drawing up the initial plans.

The plan is to build the fuselage first, modifying the initial plans as we go along with the aim of being able to offer a plan set for retail sale at a later date.
There might also be a set of laser cut ribs and formers available as well in time.

the original nose i constructed from my hand drawn sketch, will be finished as Alan suggested a display model for wall hanging.

The good thing about Cad, is press a button, and you have a 20 foot one, hint, hint, best of luck Tony, i am sure you will get some interest, i do actually, fancy a glider version, at the size you are building

non of this is my work, it is all dylan's doing.


on its building jig.

my job starts soon, the first build from the pdf files.
then i can adjust things to make it build able and send the changes back so they can be incorporated into the new plan.

On the other hand, the jig looks very complicated. It's just a thought, but in the FF world when we build fuselages like that we use a threaded rod with tube spacers on it to hold the formers in place rather than a complex jig as shown. If a square section tube is slid over the rod, it'll hold the orientation of the formers, then square or round section tubes of appropriate length slid over that and inbetween the formers create the spacing. A bolt at each end holds it secure. When the fus is built, just remove the bolts, slide out the tube and there you have it.

As an aside, if the Whirlwind was my own design rather than a kit, then that's how I would have built it.

had a re think Andy and thee fuselage will be built in 2 halves.
that way it can be built flat on the table and joined before sheeting.

i have a plan for the shack fuselage.
took some sorting out to get it printed off and i have the fun job of sticking it all together tomorrow.

nose former ( first half) and the nose floor.

spent all afternoon cutting two more plates and 2 more formers.
we were going to build the nose in two halve, but on reflection this is not necessary so the F1 was cut into quarters by mistake, still it all glued in ok.

then i started a small bit of construction, going well together with no real problems.


the nose will be constructed in one piece unlike the fuselage. that will be constructed in two halves and glued together before sheeting.

Well i finished hand cutting all the nose formers and plates.
so we had a gluing session.





so i am now starting to add all the stringers.

here is my previous attempt in its new home, or will be when i have painted it up and added some details.
