72" span Avro Shackleton was created by Ex-Member
I thought i would revisit this model after the awful large balsa one went soo wrong.

starting small this time with a baby 72" span version.
if this one works ok i will build a bigger one to match Garry's Lancaster.

first part of the drawings done, i need to draw up all the formers for the fuselage yet and then think about the wings and such.
no rush at all as i am still plodding on with the biplane.



then i printed out the fuselage template.

only a 52" long fuselage ( for a change)

as with all my builds, i will be using the central core method and building the fuselage up in two halves before joining them together after they have been sheeted.

be electric rc model.
Monz built a beautiful rubber powered one, flew very well also.

I will also be watching as I ,at one time wanted to build a Shack as I worked on them for a couple of years. I toyed with the idea of starting with a TN Lancaster plan and over laying the Shackleton drawing. Formers etc could be expanded to match . Sadly I feel that is no longer likely.

Well i sat down this morning and finished drawing up the fuselage formers.
then i printed out the templates and started cutting some Depron.


i have cut two of each part so that i can build each half of the fuselage separately.


each former was glued down with UHU Por and there ya go.

Great Subject.

I was thinking on the lines, same as Mowerman, to use a TNijhuis subject and use his Avro York which has a fuselage cross section more akin to the 'Shack'.

I'll post a photo of a shack when I can dig it out.

Here's the photo I mentioned above.

in the real aircraft, when going from front to rear and vice-versa the crew had to clamber over the huge spar tunnel.

The shack was also used as a troop carrier, during the Suez and Cyprus crises, I think they used to carry about 18-20 troops, no seats for them.

Fantastic shot.. that's quite an aeroplane. If thats taken from another mountain top, which I'm guessing it is then is also quite a scary shot :ohmy:

Memory is an amazing thing, when I saw that photo of Tony in the Shack cockpit I was sure I could smell what it used to smell like. Any body else ?

Spent today sheeting the fuselage halves on and off.


Then i tackled the tailplane and fins.


not going to have working rudders on this one as it will add tail weight and be not easy to do, there is not enough room in the tailplane for servo's.



still we are plodding on quite well so far.
hopefully be on the wings by the weekend.

Tailplane and fins assembled.


Fuselage halves glued together.


Wing centre section started.
