De Havilland DH.91 Albatross Passenger Airliner

Fantastic DH.91 built and flown by Peter Harbusch. At 1:8 scale and 4 metres wingspan and 2.7 metres length this is a large scale model which looks impressive in the air. Take off weight is ~20 kg. The wing profile is NACA 2415. The four motors are brushless 1000W with 15x8 vario-prop. 5 x 5S-5000 lipos are used for each flight.

But it 20 kg!
Mine is about 1/2 the size but less 1/20^th the weight.
It has flown but it looks like the no BEC ESCs were either over heating or interacting with each other but the net result is they shut down! As it has a separate UBEC control is maintained.
One to be revisited sometime!

Does that have sound generators? Or has the start up noise been edited onto the video?

I would put money on an ESS - AIR sound system.

Interesting start up sound, but then blown away by the normal brushless whistle. I have heard Merlin sounds in a large electric, but probably too weighty for smaller 'planes.

I have one of these in a reasonably small Cessna 182 ( 1360mm wing span ) which has an all up weight of 2.5 kg.
The hard part is positioning the speakers to retain the CoG, they weigh 60 grams ! Quorneng will be having a fit at this point.
Amplifier output is 15 watts at 12 volts. If you can find room to position the speakers well it's louder than the motor, they are designed to use the airframe as a sounding board. There are numerous engine sounds available on download but they come with a choice of two pre-loaded. Fortunately for me one is Lycoming. Once synced to the throttle I have to say it's quite effective. As you point out I think you need to be fairly selective as to the model you fit it in & certainly be prepared to make some modifications !

I'm sure they'll come, like all other clever tech. stuff. Maybe by the time I make my Depron Spitfire racer they'll have perfected them and given Merlins away with RCM&E!
