Pleased to chat to a fellow South African, although, no, I am actually not based in Cape Town - not sure how you established that, but I am in fact based in the United Kingdom.

Ive been an RC pilot for some 12 years now...21 aircraft in the "fleet"...some small foamies...some that barely fit into my garage...

We started this app to serve the RC pilot community globally, from a seed of an idea nearly 4 years ago now - I had a great friend, Louis Genade (you might know him? He was well known throughout SA in RC)...best pilot in the world in my humble opinion...he was the original founders of the company that began to develop the app, but tragically passed away about 2 years ago.

I forgot to mention, the app is also formally endorsed by SAMAA in South Africa - Brainworx, Inc, the organisation behind the development of the app, based in the USA, has a formal arrangement and agreement in place with SAMAA, so it is definately not spyware!!.... While this may or may not be something useful I wonder if it is really a niche marketing business ploy? However as long as it does not overwhelm our little Forum.... It can always be controlled by our mods.

Yes it could be because of your lack of cellular service Klippie - if you wait long enough sometimes, the spinning circles will disappear and the weather data will arrive on your phone. The app will never access your apple account unless you specifically ask it to - Apple, (and indeed Google too), have very strict security measures around apps - there is no way (from a technical stand-point) it will ever let an app through, without a user's permission - otherwise every Tom, Dick, and Harry would be writing apps to hack people's accounts and steal money. We are serious about what we are doing with the app, and genuinely are trying to serve the greater RC community to the best of our ability - we also have very strict privacy policy around our app and are completely transparent in terms of how any data we collect is used (we have to be, by law, in the United States, or we would be shut down overnight - not to mention the checks and audit process Apple and Google themselves put the app through before allowing it on the app stores - they put it through the "ringer" so-to-speak) - I can assure you there is nothing nefarious about the app or what it is doing with any data it collects from you - to top it all, we value our integrity as a company in any case, and will not allow anything to harm our reputation, of which over 8000 pilots now around the world have trusted us, including SAMAA themselves in South Africa, who have a formal partnership agreement with the company, and have officially endorsed the app.

Glad you sorted your problem out...at least you have electricity at the moment!

The app uses very little data - we specifically designed it that way, and we employed caching technologies within the app to minimise bandwidth usage as much as possible. But yes, initially, it needs to fetch a bit (its still not that much really, couple of MB only), but after that, the data usage is very thin...because it makes use of the cache.

If you are finding that your data usage is persistently high, please let me know - it should not be, and we will be all over that problem!

But in our experience over the past year since the app's release, bandwidth consumption has been a "non issue", even for our pilots in South Africa (nearly half of all the SAMAA members) - they would have moaned at me a long time ago I think...
