Some years ago, there was an article in Aeromodeler were a guy flew control line in his garden by linking the lines to a servo (must have been a powerful one) and operating the control lines from outside the circle with a R/C transmitt
er. I probably have the issue that the article appeared in, but cannot find it. Can anyone remember the article or better still tell me the date of the mag; so I can try E-bay for a copy.
Please can someone help this old cripple see his collection of ic engines take to the air again. I can fly indoor scale, but would love to see my engines were they belong, in the air.

It sounds like a mixture of electric round-the-pole flying, and something else!
I'm trying to envisage a way of mounting a servo on a pole that can rotate, but that means the receiver and battery will also have to rotate, which could be an engineering nightmare!
You would need some form of lever at the top of the pole, with the control line lines running through it, to allow the model to pull the pole around to keep up!
That - in turn, would need a very free-running bearing at the bottom of the pole, and a counter-balance to not only balance the arm, but the tension of the model on the lines!
Getting a standard servo to control the model - would need a push-rod from the servo to a much larger 180' control horn on the end of the arm, so you could use a fairly small movement (geared down) 'handle' to operate the model, so the load on the actual electronic servo wouldn't be that great - the tensile load would be on the 'handle' just like in regular control-line, where the flyer is hanging on to one end of the wires, via the handle in his hand.
What that tensile load would be is a matter of guesswork, you would need to know the weight and speed of the model.
Don't forget, the smaller the diameter of the circle, (depends on how big your garden/field is) the greater the apparent speed and centrifugal mass the device would have to cope with!
It's an interesting idea, though!

A single "tether" line to the wing tip with the throttle and elevator controlled by conventional RC with the Rx and servos in the plane..

When I was flying control line stunt up until about 1968 it was only the square corners that needed anything like heavy wrist movements
everyting else was just moving the arm
The thing is when we first start flying control line we give it to much wrist movements instead of just holding the arm straight and just moving the arm up and down

You would be better having throttle and elevator, so you could limit the speed and duration of the flights!
Cheap radio - plenty on e-bay - and for a tethered model, it cannot fly away if it proves faulty. (If it is any good, why is it on sale cheap?)
Books on r/c - I don't think there are any, really. There's not a lot to know, just plug the bits in and switch on! (battery - switch - receiver - servos) With modern 2.4 Gig kit, there's no messing about with crystals and frequency control, all you need to pay attention to is charging the batteries in the transmitter and for the receiver.
Or as suggested, join a disabled-friendly club - for example the one I'm at, we have a hard surface right up to the cabin, and a hard (flagged) footpath from the cabin to the flying area.
You don't say where in the country you are, so probably our club is too far from you - haltonmfc.co.uk/

even with Giro stabilisation they would be a bit much. Being small, they would be easy to loose sight of.

It is not so much the Warbird size that is the issue but that most are fast flying and aerodynamically "twitchy" by their very design so things happen quickly.
As a learner the one thing you need is time, both to see, understand what is happening and then make a suitable input. With a fast moving warbird type plane any action taken has to be both quick and right first time. Full gyro stability does help the flying but not so much the learning to fly process.
However with a slower moving & gentle trainer plane the time period before "the ground gets in the way" is longer and its reaction to any effect is milder allowing a control input to be made, its result observed and possibly a "better" input made before things get out of hand. In this sort of situation you are learning to fly.
Eventually with plenty of practise the link between what you see the plane doing and the appropriate hand movement becomes a case of "muscle memory" and is almost instantaneous.

Got me more confused than ever. Anyway, a neighbours son is into R/C Robotics and is going to help me.
I set up the RTP from the Round the pole hut without power feed and using fishing line to tether a cheap R/C Top Gun jet with prop's in each wing. £19 off of Wish.com. Tethering the inside wing did not work very well, even with tip weight on the outer wing. A fuselage tether worked fine.
Next step is to try an IC engined model. Possibly a Phantom Mite with a Redfin Millish up front. That is going to have to wait for a while, as I am having some building work done and the builders need the garden space. Well, it has kept me out of the pub. Regards to all, Woody.
