Oh I happily lay in bed at night listening to the sounds of planes when they pass over, there is something inexplicably hypnotic and soothing as well as magical hearing them high above you in the sky.

Ahhh twin engine, avro anson- beautiful sound!

sorry if seem to have hijacked this sky, just thought this was too beautiful not to share. Close your eyes as it takes off, and as it passes overhead -mesmerizing, goosebumps and orgasmic!!!

According to Geofrey Wellum, 3,000rpm, with variable pitch props. I see Wikipedia says 2,850rpm.
The Spits that relieved Malta were flown off aircraft carriers in the Med, using variable pitch props to give 3,000rpm and 25o of flap, they used wedges under the flaps to give the 'once only' angle. Once off the carrier they selected flap, the wedges dropped out and they deselected flap! Once off the carriers they could only go to Malta!

Not to mention young Stephen, Geoff Wellum was only 18 at the beginning of the War! Malta was his last tour of duty, after that he was a test pilot on the Typhoon.
