A bit more history
The Typhoon was built on purpose with a relatively thick wing (quite a bit thicker than the Spitfire!) to give adequate strength and internal space to house the four 20mm canon. They could only get two 20mm cannon in the Spitfire wing and even then it had to small bulges built in.
This proved to be a short coming in the Typhoon as at the high speed it was capable of the wing suffered the effects of compressibility leading to control problems. Only at lower altitudes in the thicker air could the full power of the Sabre be used.

The Tempest although looking similar had a thinner wing so it could fly faster before control problems set in. By clever design they were still able to get the four 20mm cannon in.
Six different prototypes of the Tempest were built each with different engines. two with different versions of the Sabre, two with different versions of the Griffon and two with the radial Centaurus.
Initially the Sabre version went into production with a Typhoon type chin radiator and then with radiators in the wing leading edge and a bubble cockpit.
This was followed by the Centaurus version as the Tempest II. Although the big radial itself was heavier than the Sabre it only required oil coolers so the total weight difference was just 20lbs.
Fast, manoeuvrable and with a good high altitude performance the approaching end of the war did limit Tempest production.
To combat the agile Japanese fighters a lightweight Tempest was proposed but by then the turbo jet was seen as the obvious choice for land based fighters although the concept was attractive to the Navy as the Sea Fury.
The Fury/Sea Fury was indeed smaller (but only by 2ft span) and 1000lbs lighter however the final fighter bomber Sea Fury actually ended up with a maximum take off weight 1000lbs greater than either the Tempest or Typhoon!

And the history goes a bit further.
Sydney Camm's first go at jet power was the P1035 which, surprise surprise, remodelled the Fury/Sea Fury fuselage to put a Nene turbo jet in it.
Not actually built but with further development it lost the Fury's elliptical wing and with the bifurcated inlets and jet pipes the fuselage had space for a lot of fuel so for the time it had a significant endurance.. With its cockpit right at the front giving outstanding visibility it became the Sea Hawk.

Swept wings were added to a Sea Hawk to form the P1052 .
A single tail pipe running down the fuselage created the P1081
With the axial flow RR Avon installed it became the hugely successful Hawker Hunter.

So Typhoon to Hunter in easy stages.

There must be something about Navy pilots
In 1961 at the Farnborough air show the Navy display team flying Supermarine Scimitars landed at the same time from both ends of the same runway! :woohoo:

Talk about taking a needless risk! .

Brilliant display though, those sychronised rolls are amazing to watch- does doing that not disturb the flow of air around the aircraft though and cause an affect to the others around?

They are actually quite well spaced out and flying fast so the turbulence spreads out at a narrow angle behind each plane so it does not interfere.

Haha! Did you notice that the cat officer, with the beard, was the same chap in both vids, even though the Captain had changed! I wonder who pinched that clip off who!?

yes lol supposed to have been an official vid as far as could make out, done for the admiralty (it says lol)

think if you read down on some of the comments they do argue about whether it is hermes in some shots and mention a captain davenport who is not the one stated to be on the clip- who knows, still good to watch
