Morning aviators..... great short take off here... but the landing... if I could land models that accurately I'd be well pleased. ... for real!


General Kitchener liked a good short take off... he often turned to me and said 'Lance Corporal' he said because of course I didn't have me second stripe then Sir,'Lance corporal' he said '........

there are loads of vids of these competitions, in Canada i think as well as the USA, bush pilots compete for the shortest combined take off and landing distance, some you will not believe, search for bush pilots and watch some of the places they land, inc rivers and yes i mean the water!!

There's no indication of what the wind is, in that vid. In this one, it is audibly blowing rather vigorously!

There are loads more if you look.
if you are calm and collected when all about you are going berserk - you've missed something important!

Hi Hoverfly.... there's one guy in particular who lands his Cub on hilltops, balances on top holding balance with flaps/throttle,brake, rolling over the top and take off rolling down a bushy hill.... have a look... unbe-flippin'-lovable!

Brilliant vids Jonesy! thank you for finding them :)
Love the Su-33i, slightly different but must admit I like watching the Grippen's and the Viggen's STOL capabilities but my favourite has to be the Hercules

I wish I was a glow worm, a glow worm's never glum.
Cos how can you be grumpy when the sun shines out your bum?!

That final clip is a good demonstration of what happens if fire the retro rockets whilst still 40 feet of the ground. It stops flying!

Apparently the vertical ones should have fired first but failed to ignite.
Only RATO (Rocket Assisted TakeOff) were ever used in service.
