... Had to share this amazing sight..... my ultimate nightmare, not one, but eight nitro engines...AArrgh!!.. Gorgeous model though eh? I wonder how much Hughes would have paid for the full size to have flown like this model..

An amazing achievement but like many big IC models way over scale speed and even more so for the landing!

Actually I think he ripped off the port sponson. Certainly looked a handfull to fly!

Do it now, you may never get another chance

I agree. The bigger the full size original the harder it is to make a model fly at anything like scale speed.

The Douglas Skyray in my avatar makes a pretty good job of it but it does look ridiculously slow! :P :P

It's been said before, "you can miniaturize engines, you can miniatutize aeroplanes, but you cannot miniaturize air molecules."

Yeah, damaged it on landing. Way too fast.

At 12 feet, the scale is tiny, so no hope of anything even remotely convincing. 1/18 scale.

I'll give you some figures later. Gotta go out.

Surely this a matter of perception , If you were looking at a full size flying away from you , you would be able to see it a long way away, but the model disappears much more quickly because even though you have reduced the size of the model, you havent reduced the size of the sky, which is virtually what Owen meant, so to mimic the speed is possible , but looks wrong , so we dont

The 1/18 scale Spruce Goose ... to have any hope of scale-looking flight ... would have to weigh 1.3 kg. With a total engine power of O.26 hp. Roughly.

Even then, the radius of turn, at any given bank angle, would be out by a factor of 18, I think.

The only way to do it, is to make a fast, heavy model, then film it at a high frame-rate ... play back at an appropriately slow frame-rate.

show me a model that flys at scale speed,

Most scale indoor models fly at a scale speed Alan, and a lot of the outdoor FF models do as well. The problem occurs as soon as you put in the radio gear which increases the weight, which increases the flying speed.

You need to join us in the Velodrome next time we go there, probably November.

Well now lets see.
The Skyray had a landing speed of 134mph (196ft/sec).
It was 45ft long so it travelled 4.3 times in own length each second when landing.
Mine is 43" long (3.58ft) so its scale landing speed is 4.3x3.58 = 15.4 ft/sec or 10 mph.
It certainly seems to get down to that sort of speed at touch down however I am not sure it has a maximum 5.4 times as fast like the full size did! ;)

An outdoor RC plane that flies at less than scale speed?

There was a guy who built a 1.1 times Jodel. That would have flown slowly. At the scale speed, it would develop 1.46 times the lift of the prototype.

Unless my reasoning is wrong, of course.
