I think the bottom picture shows an experimental landing gear fitted to a Fairchild C82 Packet aircraft about 1949 for soft field operations, didn't work very well in cross wind landings and the small wheels clogged up with mud.

It's an experimental tracked landing gear for the Convair B-36 Peacemaker. :)

I had heard about the experiment but these are the first close up pictures I have ever seen of it.
I don't know which type was first but it was flown.

Although only on the unarmed 'lighter' prototype and it looks like the pilot kept the take off and landing speeds as low as possible! ;)
It was apparently one answer to the huge ground pressure of the prototype's single main wheel undercarriage which required the concrete runway to be 3ft thick to support it. There was only one runway available at the time in the US.
It looks like a B50 also flew with tracked undercarriage.

When I was a lad I remember seeing 'a lot' of B36 bombers flying over my parent's house in Surrey, later on in life I associated this with the RAF Royal Review in 1953, but having looked it up, 6 B36 visited England in 1951.

The C82 tracked u/c can be seen in this picture.

I also used to watch the related C119 transport aircraft dropping paratroops at Thursley, Surrey.

Couple more photos ,apparently it had a tendency to dismantle itself on landing.

The intention was to reduce the point loading ground pressure which for planes like the B36 required extra thick concrete runways.
As can be imagined running even rubber tracks at 100+ mph did not work too reliably so the idea was scrapped and a lot of concrete poured instead. ;)
