Great news! looks a nice flier, as you now have a spare edf may I suggest a U2 next? think it would suit your methods and I'm not sure I've ever seen one modelled?

There have been several U2 models.
There used to be a fairly scale slope-soarer version, if memory serves, a glass fuz/foam wing, designed and built for sale by Ray Jones, and I had a d/f foamy one of about 2 mtrs span, Simon might remember seeing that in flight. I even mounted a camera on it for a while! The model is now 'retired' in my roof-space, as it was getting rather tatty.

I'm not a fan ( is that a pun?) of foam but that's a lovely model Eric, Any chance it could be restored?

As you've said before, these early jets had to be aerodynamically very efficient due to the relatively low thrust of the engines. Good to see her flying so nicely, good one Simon.

Do it now, you may never get another chance

Paul - it could be restored, but is it worth the effort?
The black paint was flaking off, and the foam was getting floppy with age, it has assorted dents and scrapes on it. The performance wasn't exactly 'sparkling' to start with, and with a flight time of about six minutes before the battery died of exhaustion - - - -
It would roll - eventually, and the loops were amusing - watching the wings bend, and wondering if they'd stay connected!
Yes, I know the real one doesn't do that, but then I can't fly it at 100,000 feet, either! [badass]

Had a hunt on You-tube, and found some old vids from the U2 at the old field.

Great videos Eric...thanks...hideous noise though :) I'm being slightly sarcastic but I thought one of the benefits of electric was lack of noise? I was expecting more of a turbin type whine/ whistle.

In the course of the latest repairs (29Mar22) the repainted areas required a light coat of clear acrylic spray to restore the finish to match the rest. Whilst doing this I noted the under side decals (hand cut paper) had a tendency to lift. They are stuck on with Pritstick which works well but the edges of the paper are still 'open' and the underside can get wet with a belly lander. ;)
So I decided to give the decals a heavier spray to help seal the decals completely but it proved to be a big mistake. The extra spray started to dissolved the underlying foam! :woohoo:

The paint surface and the paper were not effected so result each character now stands proud of the surface on a raised 1 mm pedestal exactly following its shape. .

Now if you wanted to achieve this effect......
Overall it probably won't effect its flight performance much but it does look odd and of course the characters are now much more vulnerable to scrape damage in a belly landing. The exact opposite of what I was trying to achieve.
Drat and double drat. :woohoo:
I fear a big new skin 'insert' will be required and those letters took ages to cut out. ;)

With the decals removed the 'pedestals' resulting from the foam collapse become clear.

Nothing for it but to cut out the damaged skin.

Not that easy as the skin was very well bonded to both the foam shear webs.
This bond is very important for the ultimate strength of the wing so it is vital the replaced skin is bonded to the shear webs equally as well. ;)

Just to complete the story a new piece of skin glued in.

A bit of lightweight filler, two thin layer of 'Sky' emulsion paint and the original decals glued back on.

Followed by several very light coats of spray enamel lacquer with each allowed to fully dry and it done.

The other side does have similar damage but it is over a much smaller area so I am tempted to leave it. ;)
