I don't know enough to comment but I thought "useless" was a bit of a silly statement..

Certainly at variance from the mainstream of modellers is that article.

NiMh are fine - PROVIDED you use them correctly!
You HAVE to charge them immediately before you want to use them. You can't 'save' them until next week, because they don't hold a charge, and some can decay by about 50% PER WEEK - in other words a pack charged a fortnight ago will have only 25% left in it.
Then, of course, cells in a pack can leak away at different rates, so if you put your part-charged pack into a circuit, the full cells will back-charge the weak ones, which A) uses up available power, and B) kills the weak cell!
-
The user said he used a Lipo without a regulator?????
One cell (1S) is 3.5 volts - not enough - two cells (2S) is 7 volts, that will fry most receivers!
-
Measuring voltage in a pack that is carrying no load is meaningless. Load it up (with a car side light-bulb etc) - and watch the volts drop! Take the load off, and the volts nearly come back.
-
Also NiMh cells are low current long duration devices, Suck a lot of amps out, and they get mad-hot and die!
Overcharge them - fast charge them, and they get mad-hot and die!
-
The old Nicads were almost bomb-proof, and could cope with a lot of mistreatment, over-discharging, and over-fast charging - within limits!
They were banned because someone noticed that cadmium was poisonous. Strange that they haven't noticed that lithium is, too!

if you are calm and collected when all about you are going berserk - you've missed something important!

To be fair cadmium is classed as a heavy metal and its toxic effects, like mercury, are very long lasting in both the human body and the food chain. Lithium although toxic in quantity it is actually beneficial at 'natural' concentrations and also being much more reactive gets 'locked' into stable compounds so dissipates faster from the food chain.
Having said that creating unnaturally high concentrations of almost anything (including humans :woohoo: ) is not good for the environment! ;)

I agree with most of what's been said, I once bought 64 Vapex 2,900mAh Nimh, I still have some but more than half of them had a half life of about one day! However, there's always a but, isn't there? Having had Eneloop batteries recommended to me I tried them. Eyewateringly expensive, yes, but fantastic! The internal discharge rate is to all intents and purposes zero, although I always charge the night before, gone are the days of worrying whether I'll still have charge in the morning. One caveat though, never use clipped in batteries in any RC function, always solder the batteries together to make up a pack.
I have a trophy camera that is put out in the reserve to check game movement, it has 8 Eneloop AA's in it. It probably only gets used once a year, it always has charge in it and never fails.

Do it now, you may never get another chance

These new DC-DC voltage changers have changed things somewhat. They're very efficient, light and are perfect for using a single Lipo cell at 3.7V to bump up the voltage to 6V. Simon uses them I believe.

My comment:
Don Fry is a bit of an idiot, his advice is 50/50 at best, much of the time he posts random, inane rubbish. The frightening thing is he claims to have been a police forensic scientist! I would question any evidence he's provided in a court.

Stay low, Move fast, Trust no-one....

Life batteries are 3.3v so two of them 6.6v, would the receiver be ok with that ?

I've never used LiFe's, so can't really comment on them. What is the freshly off the charger voltage?

There are receivers that are rated for direct LiPo use. For example the basic Lemon 6ch Rx is rated from 3.45 V (1s) to 8.4 V(2s).

As a flight battery the mWh/gm of a LiFePo4 is significantly down (nearly 20%) compared to LiPo which means the bigger the battery is as a proportion of the plane's weight the bigger the performance penalty in using LiFePo4.

However perhaps the biggest issue is the LVC. Not so many ESC's and certainly not the cheaper ones can be set to 2.8V. There is little point in using a LiFePo4 battery unless you can reset the LVC.

Not mentioned in the video but they are currently about 20% more expensive (mWh/£) and with a much smaller range of sizes. You do indeed pay for your choice!
