If it was a program update you would end up needing a new licence key (paying again)
as you have paid for version 2, not 3.

Not sure if they recoded the usb adapter from update 2.5.
Just found this on their site
"We no longer support online multiplayer for versions 2.5 or earlier.
If you have version 2.5 or earlier, and wish to use the online multiplayer service, please navigate to our Downloads section now and download and install the "2.5 to 3.0 update", following the instructions on this page."
If you can update to 2.5, and then get the 2.5 - 3.0 update.
The update patch should tell you if its compatible with your usb dongle.

Downloads can be found below

a flight sim is a programme allows you to crash a very dear model over and over again and also is a great tool to learn with the control eg realflight, clearview, Phoenix, aerofly, pre flight,fs one,fms some are free to download and just use your keyboard or use your training coard and use your own transmitter

...and with some 'games', you can change the model parameters, putting the c of g into silly positions, have built in random control or engine failures (or both at the same time), cross-winds, turbulence, etc, almost like outside in the real air.
So you can practice a silly manoeuvre, and when you crash, it doesn't hurt your pocket.
As Mike put, you can use your real tx via the buddy lead, or a 'dummy' tx which has no gubbins inside, and therefore the battery cannot run out, or the keyboard..
The only thing you cannot relate to is the orientation, as the 'view' tracks the model around the sky, and you can fly into obstructions on the ground, while thinking it was somewhere else!
