I am going to use the .5mm carbon in the 6 main bracing tubes that go up to the wing. Not worked all the kinks out yet, but possibly inside rounded balsa to make up the size. I may also add some of the .28mm to add tensional assistance to the struts.

Will be off air for a couple of days as I need to be somewhere.

Cheers
Danny

These are the areas I am looking at using the rod. I am not sure how I am going to merge the posts with the frame work yet, the original idea was a little patch of carbon veil and thin CA, but I am still working through that one :)

Personally, Septic, I would forget the carbon. If you build the rest of the model light, you won't need it. But if you still believe you do, use either hard balsa, spruce or bamboo.

I would tend to agree about the use of carbon in a light weight balsa structure.
A carbon rod has huge tensile strength, maybe 50 lbs for even for the smallest diameter, but only a tiny fraction of that in bending or compression.
If a carbon rod is used in a location where the load in any direction is measured in just an ounce or two whilst it will work it is not actually the lightest solution.

A 'strut' made of the sort of things Andy suggests will have a more useful combination of strength and rigidity and perhaps more importantly it can be efficiently fixed to the rest of the structure.

Hi Martyn, been on hols for three weeks and other things have taken my mind off modelling. Realistically, I doubt it will be ready for this year. I will get back to it.

Thanks Danny

I have to admit that I thought you were being a bit ambitious for this years event. Still looking forward to see how it progresses though.

Taking four weeks away from the build, on the run up to the event is going to probably mean it wont be ready, but I am going to plod along anyway, who knows.... I do work better to a deadline :woohoo:

A bit more done, very much a making it up as I go along here....

Will lift this next and build the other side, might even make a starboard side to match this port side, there again I might just make another port, depends how much coffee I have in the morning

Lifted the side and it weighs 1.1g so hopefully we can keep this up.....

A little more done, still unsure how it will all go together but so far so good.....

Some of the cross bracing between the halves will be knocked out once the centre section is finalised.

Thanks Tony, I don't know I found the cad on my PC and thought I would throw it together!

I think it's an oil derrick ;)

The good thing is the oil derrick is only 3.2g :)

Thx Tony, you are easily impressed ;)

Grabbed a few minutes to join the rear of the fuselage over the plan view.

The cub doesn't have perpendicular sides, so I am going to have to build out along the top of this structure, before adding the upper formers at the rear. I am not very good at this designing lark, there was probably a much easier method but this is how I have done it :(

This is a fun picture, you may have seen it before but it is great if you are trying to get the underlying structure right, or in my case similar
