They did nothing for me but on the RCM and E thread guys became very complex about angles and dangles and it is after all a Fun trainer not a complex bit of kit that needs flaps to land or anything else.

Yes, but it is so much more FUN with flaps :)

ailerons bank the plane for rolls and turning, flaps are to help take offs and landings.

As a rule of thumb, flaps between 0 and 45 give an increase in lift, and not much drag, flaps 46 to 90 create more drag than lift.

if you are calm and collected when all about you are going berserk - you've missed something important!

So are the flaps 46-90 to slow the model down.

Thanks for that piece of information Eric the Funcub can be flown so slowly without flaps anyway

Any flap slows it down.

Look at the front of the plane, and look at the fairly large percentage of thet frontal area formed by the flaps.

The Fun cub can fly very slowly. On a windy day, the combination of the slow speed, low prop wash and wind can at times make the rudder not do quite what you want to keep the wings level. Use the ailerons too harshly, and the Funcub will drop a wing, the nose drops a lot at the same time!

Using the flaps, you increase the effective AoA on the centre part of the wing, at the same time reducing it on the outer portions (for the same speed as if you were flying without the flaps).
This means you can now safely use the ailerons to keep it level.

The flaps also increase the effective approach angle, and if you are too long, you can even put the nose down a bit without gaining too much speed.
Once you are on the ground, the drag of the flaps greatly reduces the landing roll.

On something like the Funcub, where there is usually an abundance of extra power, on take off, the flaps do two things. They increase the lift and lower the take off speed, and the flaps being in the powerful propwash also give a vectored thrust effect.

I agree they are not needed to fly the Funcub, but when used they add a new dimension to its capabilities.

Your funcub would take off in zero feet if you stood it on its tail :)

Just would like to see you land it back to the same position.

If you reduce flaps to zero while flying it falls out of the sky, ask me how I know!

Do it now, you may never get another chance
