Well since Paul said there were very small EDF's available I thought I'd have a look at what's out there to see if I can get my mojo back, much to Mary's delight.
Knowing that the Outerzone offerings were free I went there first, and found the P215, which to me is such a pretty aeroplane, it was originally designed for some kind of rocket/Jetex motor but surely a small EDF could be persuaded to fit! And at 18" span not too small for old eyes.
I duly downloaded the PDF files and, yup just the job. The wing section will even give quite a bit of lift and could be modified to give more if she gets a bit portly.
I printed them out (2 pages) then discovered the check measurement bar at the bottom measured 60mm instead of 100mm. I then went back to the printer options and told it to print actual size, great, except that I now only have about 1/4 of page 1 & 2. Help needed please.

Can't help with your printing problems although I think there is a guide to printing on the outerzone site?
looks a interesting project though, following with interest, incedently the rocket motors, rapists, are now available again..still tempted by a V1.

quite like the shape, please make it ff Klippy.
Have a look at this site, loads of info on mini edf jets etc, the guy who runs it ( Mike) is a genius and very willing to help out with advice.

A blonde moment I'm afraid, get more and more these days, part of the Shingles. Printing sorted, I told my printer to print actual size, Poster, it then printed 6 A4 sheets for each page, only just exactly the right size!
The trouble with FF Paul is my open space is littered with thorn trees, and any uncontrolled landing is bound to find one, ask me how I know! The other problem is, when they cut them as bush encroachment control they just leave the cut branches and stuff on the ground! They claim it allows the grass to grow underneath without being cropped too close! Crap! Sadly we often see game limping because they've walked on this stuff!

I see the Vintage model company have a kit but I'm afraid at nearly 35quid for the kit it puts it squarely out of my league. I'm going to check balsa stock tomorrow and see how much 1.5mm or 1/16" soft balsa I have, I may have to do some stripping.

Double cover it Klippy, polyester silk and dope with tissue over the top is bomb proof ( well Heather and gorse!).

If I were going for a mini EDF of that ERA (which I am not!) I would choose something like the Ta183.

Aerodynamically pretty sound and with a proper tail likely to be adequately stable. ;)
Just saying.

Won't weight be an issue?

obviously there is a weight penalty but it's very little as you use far less dope and the silk I've been using, when I can get it! is as light as tissue.

To my mind the 183 is ugly, and likely spawned the Mig 15. I've always liked wings and the 215 grabbed my attention, then of course while looking for 183 plans I came across the DH Swallow, now there's a pretty aeroplane!

I'd forgotten about Gorse, disgusting stuff, an alien invader that's very difficult to get rid of. The New Zealanders have been trying to get rid of it for years now, I believe they are winning but only by constantly revisiting the infestation sites.
I do have some silk that I bought as part of a covering system for my Hawker Fury (which probably won't ever get built.:( ) I'll investigate.

OK, 18" wing span, any ideas about an all up weight once tissued and doped? I've looked at the potential problems of control. Elevons are a must and I see the prototype had rudders as well, probably out of the question. I have some 1.7gm servos that are only 6.5mm thick, they'll fit very nicely in the balsa block wing tips.

You should know the old saying, Tony -
one year's seeds, ten years weeds.

if you are calm and collected when all about you are going berserk - you've missed something important!

This project may yet stall, I can't source tissue or light weight silk locally.:(

and likely spawned the Mig 15

which was the most produced and effective jet fighter ever. I wonder why that might be. ;)
Ah! the Swallow. Undoubtedly a very pretty plane. 3 were built but all ended in fatal crashes. Eric Brown flew it and survived a transonic buffet event simply because he was short, sat lower in the cockpit, so avoided repeatedly banging his head on the reinforced canopy. The first 'low speed' prototype actually crashed last of the three from a non recoverable inverted spin.

You are quite right to be concerned at weight. All EDFs need a relatively high battery weight simply to deliver an appropriate thrust. For small EDFs its even worse. The saving grace for free flight is the powered duration is short allowing a smaller but even harder worked battery to be used.
