Funny you should mention that, I used to have bags of the stuff. Looked like spaghetti, & that's exactly where it came from ! ;)

If you search "Jetex.org" there is a very interesting article included about the origins of Jetex. (You can't link directly to it as it has copy 'spoiler' protection)
I was aware of the Wilmot brothers and Monsour but had not realised that it included Frog and Lines bros as well as significant rocket production during WWII hence the involvement of ICI.

I doubt it would be easy to DIY replicate the Jetex fuel - guanidine nitrate oxidiser base with nitrated resorcinols as a catalyst. What ever that is! :woohoo:

No problem Paul, other than we have Load shedding again, and it's right through my computer time.:(
With reference to the Estes starters, what sort of price are we talking, per 50 for example.
Simon said "I doubt it would be easy to DIY replicate the Jetex fuel - guanidine nitrate oxidiser base with nitrated resorcinols as a catalyst. What ever that is!"
I imagine that guanidine nitrate, is raw seabird shit, This is what you get when you search Resorcinol:-
Resorcinol is an organic compound with the formula C₆H₄(OH)₂. It is one of three isomeric benzenediols, the 1,3-isomer. It is a white, water-soluble solid.
Molar mass: 110,1 g/mol
Formula: C6H6O2
IUPAC ID: Benzene-1,3-diol
Melting point: 110 °C
Boiling point: 277 °C
Soluble in: Water
I imagine this is where the Oxygen comes from for combustion, just a guess, I'm not a chemist.

Do it now, you may never get another chance

Production and properties

Although it is the salt formed by neutralizing guanidine with nitric acid, guanidine nitrate is produced industrially by the reaction of dicyandiamide (or calcium salt) and ammonium nitrate.[2]

It has been used as a monopropellant in the Jetex engine for model airplanes. It is attractive because it has a high gas output and low flame temperature. It has a relatively high monopropellant specific impulse of 177 seconds (1.7 kN·s/kg).[note 1]

Guanidine nitrate's explosive decomposition is given by the following equation: H6N4CO3 (s) → 3 H2O (g) + 2 N2 (g) + C (s)

Applications
Guanidine nitrate is used as the gas generator in automobile airbags.[3] It is less toxic than the mixture used in older airbags of sodium azide, potassium nitrate and silica (NaN3, KNO3, and SiO2), and it is less explosive and sensitive to moisture compared to the very cheap ammonium nitrate (NH4NO3).

Safety

The compound is a hazardous substance, being an explosive and containing an oxidant (nitrate). It is also harmful to the eyes, skin, and respiratory tract.[2]

if you are calm and collected when all about you are going berserk - you've missed something important!

OK, assuming I can get them posted my mail forwarder (Forward2Me) will charge at least 25gbp, lets say I spend 25gbp, that's 50quid for 35 flights on a Pension that's only just over 200. I'll give it a miss thanks Paul. That's not to say I might not re-visit the solution. A battery powered ignition system is very attractive, I'm sure I can find a wire size that glows sufficiently red for a once off use. Given that I'll be using Black powder, hopefully with some kind of damping modifier, it looks as though I'll need some kind of bungee launch with a rail.

Do it now, you may never get another chance

Interesting Eric, I was thinking Ammonium Nitrate fertilizer as one of the ingredients.

Anyone remember the name of the weedkiller you could mix with sugar ? That gave a pretty good bang, far away in a misspent youth ! :woohoo:

We used to mix fertilizer with sugar and sulfur, we could never get it to burn, it only ever went BANG! Ammonium or Potassium nitrate as I remember. Remember Beirut! Whatever is used as a propellant it has to be lit up gently, otherwise it goes BANG!

A post elsewhere on the site hit me right between the eyes, what's wrong with using DT fuse as an igniter?

You could use d/t fuse although it burns rather slow, just 're read the article in this month's aeromodeller and apperently the modern way to ignite rocket motors is to use a "cautery tool "

Edit: Just had a rare brainwave! just use a tiny scrap of wire wool connected to a 9v battery, back in the day I used to light fires that way.

I only mentioned sodium chlorate (used as a weed killer) and sugar because as a youth I made quite a few big home made 'roman candle' type fireworks using it. As the contends were loose in an open ended tube it burned quite slowly but with an impressive intense flame. It burns very hot and by using thin a walled cardboard tube is became a true 'candle' and burned down as it went!
