In a moment of madness I purchased a Playboy Senior a wee while back... So far I have built the tail surfaces, 90% of the wings and made a start on the fuselage and this is where my lack of vintage airframes comes in...

I have built the first side of the fuz, covered in cling film and built the second side directly on top which worked out perfectly. Now here comes my problem/question... As there are no formers as such other than the firewall, how can you accurately cut and glue the cross members ( 3/16th Square) to each side and make sure it is both accurate in width and square?

on the plan does it not have a view from the top to work from?

Usually the first 1/3 or so of the fuselage sides are parallel so you cut all your cross pieces for that section exactly the same length. I usually tape a bundle together and then use a sanding block to even the out). Then with one side of the fuselage pinned on the board you glue your upper and lower cross members on, making sure they're perfectly square (use 2 squares for this, fore/aft and top/bottom). Once dry you glue the other half on, making sure you have a square at the nose and tailplane ends. This is particularly important because if they're not square when you pinch the nose and tail together you will impart a twist into the fuselage.

Do it now, you may never get another chance

The Outer Zone Senior Playboy plan certainly shows a top view from which you can cut the cross pieces making sure you note which piece goes where.

Thanks for the answers gents.. Yes the plan has a top view, I was just concerned that it would be difficult to get perfect right angles and there is not a lot of surface area for strength purposes.

When short of surface area use gussets.

Here's a couple of others that have formers to keep the build square. You could make up some for your model to use as jigs, then remove them once the fuselage sides are joined:

Thanks very much for your links Mr Sephton... Again this is why I love the aeromodelling community as everyone is so helpful and willing to impart their knowledge and experiences, I often spend more time down the field helping out others than flying myself

Loved reading up on the Westland Widgeon, what a piece of art !

Haven't ordered up my free flighter from VMC yet but have the order in today, Kindney Stones are causing me serious pain !

Now still can't decide between the 150 series Hurricane or Tiger Moth :whistle:

FWIW peeps I always laminated my formers after crushing loads with my hamfists .Cut one grain in line vertically and one with grain horizontal to frame .1/2 the thickness of kit or plan thickness T|hen glue together.Yes it is extra work but worth it .I've never crushed a former since I started doing this. Same weight for more strength. I agree that some of the Kiel Kraft models were very pretty. My problem was always getting the rubber right Launches varied from a vertical corkscrew to a long floating glide. Humph! :evil:

Kidney stones....ouch! I've not suffered them, fortunately, but I have just had a urethral dilatation....may the pain be away from you as it was, eventually, with me!

Tiger Moth or Hurricane. I'm not a great lover of the Hurricane as a model or a full-size aircraft....and I've flown the full size and built and flown models of both types. I'd go for the Tiger every time

...and anyway, there are more colour schemes for the latter than you could shake a stick at!

In the end, it's your choice, Graeme, all we ask is put the build in a thread, please.....I'll look forward to it, either way!

I've also a soft spot for both the Hurriback and the Tiggie but I am partway through building a Practical Scale 72" span Tiggie. Does that tell you anything? However I have the plans for a 45" Hurri and want plans for a 60" or so. Once I get fit again I'll have plenty to do LOL
